Sylvain Distin was the notable name among those released this summer by AFC Bournemouth.
It may well be the end of the line for the 38-year-old, who made just three league starts and nine total appearances in his one season with the Cherries. He was brought in last summer on a free transfer from Everton to add veteran leadership to the newly-promoted side. Distin began his pro career back in 2000 with PSG before spending several seasons as a regular for Manchester City and the Toffees. He may not want to hang up his boots yet and could attempt to latch on somewhere but retirement looms as he turns 39 later this year. Sat, Jun 11, 2016 09:43:00 AM

Bournemouth confirmed on Tuesday that Sylvain Distin will not remain at the club once his contract expires next month.

Distin signed a one-year contract at the club on a free transfer last summer from Everton, where he spent six years after joining from Portsmouth. The 38-year-old made 12 Premier League appearances, including nine starts, in Bournemouth's first-ever season in the Premier League and will now leave on a free transfer. Said manager Eddie Howe: "Going into the Premier League, we felt bringing someone with vast experience and knowledge of the division would be hugely beneficial to our squad and give them someone to lean on. Sylvain played that role perfectly, but he also played his part on the pitch and was involved in some pivotal games."

Eddie Howe revealed in his press conference ahead of AFC Bourenmouth's match against West Bromwich Albion that center back Sylvain Distin is out with an injured back and is likely finished playing for the season.

How also confirmed that Adam Smith will not be playing again this season as he continues to see specialists for treatment of his hernia. Max Gradel's status is unchanged from last week. He has made progress with a calf issue but remains a doubt for this weekend. Distin had a run in the side where he started nine consecutive games from mid-September through late November but he has not started before or since, making three appearances in which two were one-minute cameos. This could turn out to be an unceremonious end to the 38 year old veteran's playing career.

Bournemouth added some veteran leadership to their newly promoted side by signing center back Sylvain Distin.

A Toffee since 2009, Distin began seeing his playing time fade over the past couple of seasons. He hasn't maintained the best fitness record in the that time while younger talent John Stones began to carve out his role as the center back of the future. At 37 years old, it would be difficult to imagine Distin being looked at as an every-game starter. He will likely be moved in and out of Eddie Howe's XI and never play two straight matches in short succession, not too much unlike Rio Ferdinand's role for QPR last season. Where he will make the most impact is likely on the training ground and in the locker room. He shouldn't be seen as anything more than a bench-filler for fantasy purposes heading into next season.

Sylvain Distin has picked up an illness this week and will need to be assessed before getting the go-ahead for what would be the final match of his career tomorrow against Tottenham.

The Martinez quote in the tweet that this news is attached to states that "We hope he (Distin) can make a farewell appearance on Sunday." Judging by his turn of phrase, even if Distin is a full go, it doesn't appear he will play any more of a role than a cameo substitution in the latter stages of the match, unless of course an injury or a sending off results in an earlier substitution. For fantasy owners, it is a situation to avoid.

Sylvain Distin picked up a groin injury in Everton's FA Cup draw against West Ham United with the extent of the injury yet unknown.

Distin will have further assessment tomorrow but typically any sort of groin-related issue will require some time off the training ground. The Toffees and Hammers played a day or two later than every other club's cup match, giving them less time to rest for league action this weekend. With Phil Jagielka and John Stones fit, Distin is the odd man out at center back either way. With Tim Howard sidelined and Man City next on the docket, investment in Everton defense is probably not too wise this week.

Roberto Martinez stated in a recent press conference that Everton center back Sylvain Distin will not be available for their trip to Southampton.

Martinez also pointed out that Phil Jagielka would not be rushed back to fill the gap left by Distin, meaning the likeliest defender to partner John Stones at center back would be Antolin Alcaraz. Alcaraz carries a tempting price tag for those looking for a cheap route to the Toffee defense, but the matchup is not a favorable one.

Sylvain Distin is back and training for Everton and could possibly make the squad for their trip to West Bromwich Albion Monday night.

Roberto Martinez indicated that Distin has come out of four days of rigorous training in good condition, so the Frenchman's hamstring issue appears to be behind him. Still, there is no reason to risk investing in him this weekend should Martinez decide to give the veteran a bit more time. John Stones had been a nice budget fill in for the short term, but he can no longer be relied upon for starts.

Sylvain Distin picked up a minor hamstring knock after completing his shift against Souhampton over the weekend, but Rberto Martinez says the veteran should still be fit for Everton's New Year's Day match with Stoke City.

With Phil Jageilka already all but ruled out, Martinez is hoping to have Distin available who would likely partner Antolin Alcaraz in the center of the Toffee defense. Alcaraz remains a strong bet to deputize for someone and would be a budget friendly option for those banking on an Everton clean sheet.

Sylvain Distin picked up a knock against Norwich last weekend and isn't a sure thing to recover in time for the Saturday match with West Brom.

Roberto Martinez said "Sylvain Distin is the one we're a little bit concerned about, but knowing Sylvain, you can never say that he's not going to be available at the weekend." Talk about a lot of words that add up to nothing definitive. I'd avoid him and go with Leighton Baines (if you can afford him) or Phil Jagielka.

Everton, fresh off of their acquisition of Gerard Deulofeu, are looking to strengthen their defense with Porto's Rolando the rumored target.

Everton must get younger at the back and Rolando, while not young at 27, would certainly be a move in the right direction age-wise with Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka aging. The defender gained some top tier experience last season on loan at Napoli and would represent the sort of defensive purchase that Roberto Martinez could never make at Wigan due to budget constraints. The only concern for Everton, given their spending so far this summer, is who will be leaving to fund it. It seems hard to believe that they can continue to buy with no departures to balance the books.
