Rudy Gestede scored his first Premier League goal for Middlesbrough during Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Manchester United.
Middlesbrough, with caretaker boss Steve Agnew at the held, were unable to get the result they would have hoped for against the Red Devils. A first-half header from Marouane Fellaini and a thunderous 62nd-minute strike by Jesse Lingard put United ahead which prompted Agnew to bring on Gestede. Although Gestede pulled one back with a close-range finish and Alvaro Negredo looked better playing alongside the winter signing, former Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes slipped in stoppage time and Antonio Valencia tapped in to secure all three points. The loss means Boro remain 19th with 22 points. Sun, Mar 19, 2017 11:09:00 AM

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka says he was impressed by the glimpses of promise Rudy Gestede showed in his debut at Watford last Saturday.

After making his Premier League debut against Watford, introduced as a substitute with half an hour to play on Saturday, Karanka says Gestede will have a big role to play in Middlesbrough's campaign moving forward. Karanka said: "I said when we brought him here that he brings us something different...With him on the pitch, we have the kind of striker who you need sometimes to hold the ball, to create an impact on the pitch, score and defend from set pieces." Karanka added that Gestede will 'for sure' start games in the future, making the Beninese a forward to watch in fantasy over the new few weeks. Middlesbrough will close out the month of January with Premier League matches against West Ham (GW22) and West Brom (GW23), split by their fourth round FA Cup tie with Accrington Stanley on January 28th.

Middlesbrough complete the signing of striker Rudy Gestede from Aston Villa for a reported fee between £6m and £7m.

Gestede becomes Aitor Karanka's first signing of the January transfer window and has penned a contract that will keep him at the Riverside until June 2020. Gestede scored four goals in 19 appearances for Aston Villa this season and is no stranger to the Premier League, having scored five goals in 24 leagues matches for Villa when they relegated last season. The 28-year-old will compete with first-choice strikers Alvaro Negredo and Cristhian Stuani for a starting role, while his arrival could result in moves away from Middlesbrough for out-of-favor strikers David Nugent and Jordan Rhodes. Gestede's Premier League return could come on January 14th when Middlesbrough travel to Vicarage Road to take on Watford.

Aston Villa clinched its first relegation of the Premier League era following a 1-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Villa was last relegated in 1987 but was the clear favorite to suffer the drop for much of the season, which included three different managers and only three wins. The club's latest form may be the tell-tale sign of its mediocrity this season: nine straight Premier League losses while being outscored 25-3 and one goal in the last six. Villa couldn't manage a shot on goal until Rudy Gestede made his way onto the pitch with under 10 minutes remaining in the match. The forward seemed to give hope for an away point after seeing his tap-in blocked by Daley Blind while the subsequent corner resulted in Gestede hitting the post with a well-struck volley.

Aston Villa have strung together two positive results in a row after earning a point against league leaders Leicester City.

Leicester had the opportunity to put the match away but Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty and allowed Aston Villa to stay in the match. Rudy Gestede scored in the second half to tie the match at 1-1 and earn Villa a point. Villa are still in last place, but after two positive performances in a row, there is hope for this team that they might get back in the relegation battle instead of sitting alone in last place.

Rudy Gestede has emerged as an early doubt for Aston Villa for week 16.

Gestede took a "kick to the knee" against Southampton this past weekend and his status going forward is questionable. Gestede should be owned in deeper leagues as he provides a good relief at the forward position in nice matchups, but if there are healthy options of the same caliber on the waiver wire, don't be afraid to pick them up, as Gestede is not a must-own type player.

Problems continue to mount for Aston Villa as both Jordan Amavi and Rudy Gestede picked up injuries while on international duty.

Amavi suffered a "serious knee injury" while on France under-21 duty and Gestede was replaced moments before the break during Benin's win over Burkina Faso due to an unspecified problem. Pierre Mankowski [u21s coach] revealed post-match on Thursday "that it was too soon to make an accurate and conclusive diagnosis on the [Amavi] injury," but initial reports suggest ligament damage and an extended period on the side-lines. Villa are hopeful that the news on their leading goal scorer is a lot more positive despite an indifferent start to his Claret and Blues career. Gestede has managed 3-goals from six starts since arriving from Blackburn and with Agbonlahor managing an ongoing calf problem, the 27-year-old could be the man to fire Remi Garde’s men out of the relegation zone.

Rudy Gestede found the net twice for Aston Villa, but their attempt to make up an early deficit came up short, losing to Liverpool 3-2.

Villa were behind the eight-ball immediately, conceding within two minutes, and would go two goals down just before the hour mark. The attack finally got into gear though, when Gestede struck paydirt, set up by an Alan Hutton cross. Unfortunately for the Villans, the defense shut off for a minute and the Reds would score again to restore the two goal lead. Gestede would make things interesting though, scoring his second goal of the day with a header from 12 yards out, assisted by Jordan Amavi's cross. Concern begins to mount for Tim Sherwood as his club sit in the relegation zone with only four points to date.

Rudy Gestede is making quite a name for himself at his new club with an early-season winner and now the only goal in a League Cup over rival Birmingham City.

Tim Sherwood may not have had a lot of significant highlights this season at Aston Villa but his stature with supporters will certainly have gone up at least a little after beating local rivals Birmingham City 1-0 to advance in the Capital One Cup. A largely first team starting eleven should have been favored to beat the Championship side and that's exactly what they did. Villa could have been more clinical with 17 shots yielding only three on goal and one in the net but they got the win and those have been in short supply in the Midlands in recent years so the method of getting there was probably secondary.

Rudy Gestede was left on the bench once again for Aston Villa and seems to have lost his starting job.

Gestede hasn't started both of Aston Villa's last two matches and his starting job is considered questionable going forward. The striker hasn't been the most prolific forward so far in his Villa career and only three of his 14 shots have been on target so far. Three shots on target in 300 Premier League minutes is not great and Gestede will have to play better in order to earn more playing time. He is only worth holding onto in very deep draft leagues at this point in time.

Rudy Gestede gets his easiest matchup of the season in week four, at home against Sunderland.

Sunderland have allowed teams to shoot 19 times per game against them, highest in the league by a margin. They've also allowed nine goals in their first three matches, which were against Leicester, Norwich, and Swansea. There hasn't been much to be optimistic about at Sunderland, and Aston Villa can take advantage this week when they face them. Gestede should be licking his lips at the opportunities he'll have on Saturday.

Rudy Gestede made his debut as a substitute a memorable one, coming on to score the match-winner as Aston Villa spoil Bournemouth's home opener, 0-1.

Of the two striker signings that arrived this summer as replacements for Christian Benteke, it was Jordan Ayew who got the start, but he didn't look up to speed in his 58 minutes of work. On came Gestede, and twelve minutes later, he headed home and Ashley Westwood corner. For fantasy purposes, Westwood is raises even more of an eyebrow, as he immediately shows attacking returns priced at the minimum for midfielders in the game and probably seldom chosen among draft leagues. It was results like this that got Villa early points last season, they still look a rather weak attacking side, but it just goes to show every club has assets to offer in fantasy.

Tim Sherwood continues to rebuild the Aston Villa squad he inherited last season by adding striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers to the ranks and French midfielder Jordan Veretout from Nantes as the Villains’ swooped to make their fourth and fifth signings of the summer window.

Gestede arrives for a smidgeon under $10 million and will challenge Jordan Ayew, Libor Kozak and Gabby Agbonlahor for a starting berth in Villa’s new look attack. Having established himself within the second tier of English football as a strong frontman who enjoys an aerial duel and – most importantly – has the ability to score the 26 year-old bagged 32-goals from his last 50 league starts and he is a player Sherwood knows well. Gestede was joined on Friday by under-20 World Cup winner Jordan Veretout - a dead ball specialist - who finalised his deal from Ligue 1 side Nantes just hours later.
