Stewart Downing could be on the move after the winger was told he can leave Middlesbrough on loan this month.
Downing began the season as regular in Aitor Karanka's side but has started just one game since November. The former England winger's situation has captured the attention of multiple clubs including Championship side Newcastle, who are in battle to earn promotion back to the top-flight, and Sam Allardyce's Crystal Palace. Downing rejoined Middlesbrough 18 months ago and helped secure promotion to the Premier League after a successful spell under Allardyce at West Ham, scoring eight goals in 37 appearances. While the news so far is merely speculation, a departure from the Riverside Stadium seems realist for Downing given the emergence of fellow wingers Viktor Fischer and Adama Traore. New Middlesbrough signing Bernardo Espinosa has vowed to come back "a better person and a better player" after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in January. The Colombian defender is expected to be fully fit by early autumn.

Espinosa joins the newly promoted side as a free agent despite interest from Premier League rivals Bournemouth, Watford and Everton ending his spell at Spanish club Sporting Gijon. The Colombian defender is said to be a tough tackling right sided centre-back whose strong in the air. However, the 26-year-old can lack discipline – he picked up 20 yellow cards during 2013/14 - and has averaged one caution in every 245 La Liga minutes over the past four seasons. Espinosa joins summer additions Marten de Roon [Atlanta] and Viktor Fischer [Ajax] as manager Aitor Karanka looks to emulate the success of last seasons promoted sides AFC Bournemouth and Watford.

The BBC are reporting via Twitter that Stewart Downing's move to childhood club Middlesbrough has been completed.

It's a big day on Teesside as Stewart Downing returns home in an attempt to fire Boro back into the Premier League where they were when he left the club to seek fame and fortune at bigger clubs. Downing played well for West Ham for most of last season in a new, central midfield role but faded down the stretch along with the club's fortunes. New manager Slaven Bilic saw him as surplus to requirements and he has now been sold. The only surprise is that he has chosen the Championship when Sunderland and others in the Premier League lodged interest.

Stuart Downing burst onto the Premier League scene playing for Middlesbrough and it looks likely that he will return to his hometown to close out his playing career.

Despite interest from Sunderland, and probably others, in the Premier League Downing looks set to take a step backward to the Championship in an effort to see if he can help get his hometown club back into the top flight. Boro finished in the playoff positions last season but couldn't win promotion. Downing, for his part, experienced a renaissance of sorts when Sam Alardyce moved him to a central midfielder role behind the forwards. One imagines that he will be even more effective playing in a similar role for Boro in the Championship if the move goes through as expected. Downing's role behind the forwards at West Ham has likely already been usurped by expensive signing Dmitri Payet so a move somewhere seems inevitable.

Sunderland have had a £5 million bid for West Ham winger Stewart Downing turned down, with Middlesbrough standing by to move in…

The battle for the services of Stewart Downing is hotting up, with former clubs Sunderland and Middlesbrough going toe-to-toe. Downing spent a short loan spell at Sunderland in 2003 and manager Dick Advocaat has made no secret of his desire to take him there permanently. A transfer fee of £5m and a three-year deal has been tabled for the player who turns 31 this month. But former club Middlesbrough are prepared to better that, offering a £6m fee and a four-year deal. It is thought that Downing planned a move to his boyhood club if they had been promoted, but whether he would drop into the Championship is unclear. West Ham are in no hurry to sell the winger after an excellent season, hitting six goals and eight assists in an almost ever-present campaign (37 matches).

Sunderland look set to return with an improved bid for West Ham winger Stewart Downing…

West Ham have completed the signing of attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet for a fee reported to be in the region of £12 million. This could suggest The Hammers are ready to do business for Downing, despite him being one of West Ham’s best performers last season. The sometimes maligned wide man man (who has 35 England caps) only missed one match last season scoring six goals and providing eight assists. Playing some of his most effective football in the number 10 role. It’s believed Downing was planning a return to his native Teeside if Middlesbrough had been promoted, but nearby Sunderland might be a suitable compromise. Downing spent a short loan spell there in 2003 and Dick Advocaat has already had a bid of £5 million turned down.

Steward Downing was the driving force for West Ham United's season and was a big part of them finishing in 12th in the Premier League.

Downing finished with six goals and eight assists but was constantly a threat to the opposition and averaged 1.9 shots and 2.3 key passes per game. He played in 37 matches and despite slowing down, was important to everything West Ham did in attack, especially with their strikers often injured. If their strikers can stay healthy and finish his chances next year, he can improve upon his 308 fantasy points, which was good enough for sixth amongst all midfielders.

Steward Downing has a good fantasy week in West Ham's 1-2 loss to Everton this past weekend.

Downing has had a slow stretch in the past month or two but finally broke his slow spell with a goal against Everton this past weekend. Downing punished Everton with a well hit shot in the 62nd minute, but it wasn't enough to win West Ham any points. The winger was the most dangerous player on the pitch for the Hammers and he can be a good fantasy pick next season despite carrying some risks of inconsistency.

Stewart Downing has slowed down considerably, even since the last time we mentioned his decline in March.

Stewart Downing had a fantastic beginning of the season but he has considerably declined his form since and is barely usable in fantasy leagues at the moment. He has averaged 5.25 points over his last four matches and considering his costs £ 12.34 M in the Yahoo! game, he is unusable at that price. Some of Downing's freedom to create has evaporated since the beginning of the season and that seems to be limiting his output, so we would feel safe to drop him in most formats.

Stewart Downing has slowed down in recent weeks after a hot start to the season.

The West Ham midfielder has not been horrific but also hasn't shown the form he was displaying early in the season. He's averaged just 6.5 fantasy points over the last four weeks in the Yahoo! game and at this point, there are better players in his price range that you should be considering. Take him out of your Yahoo! lineup while he regains form, but keep him in draft leagues.

West Ham scored three goals in about 25 minutes to beat Hull City with a classic 3-0 score.

The first half was slow from both teams with few chances being created and not much happening on either side. The second was completely different and the Hammers hammered Hull City in a just a little under 25 minutes with goals from Andy Carroll, Morgan Amalfitano, and Stewart Downing. West Ham are now in seventh place, just below the threshold for European competitions.

West Ham's in-form winger Stewart Downing is an excellent option for Week 22 as the Hammers host Hull City.

Continuing to defy pre-conceived logic by playing well each and every week in his attacking midfield role, Downing was simply superb against Swansea in Week 21 and he can cause Hull further woe this weekend. Expect a goal or an assist, shots on target, successful crosses and a double digit fantasy return.

Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll lift West Ham to its fourth win in five matches, beating Leicester 2-0 on Saturday.

Carroll scored midway through the first half and Downing added to the lead shortly after the second half began with an unstoppable effort placed into the far corner. Downing has a goal or an assist in the last four games and Carroll has three goals in his last three. West Ham sits in fourth place, one point behind Manchester United, while Leicester remains bottom of the table with 10 points.

Stewart Downing continued his hot streak against Sunderland this weekend.

The midfielder scored a goal to give West Ham a 1-1 draw at Sunderland and finished the week with 16 fantasy points. In week 15, he finished with 13 fantasy points when he picked up an assist and six successful crosses. The week before he had 9 points that came through another assist. His assists and goals make him a fine choice for any fantasy game, especially with West Ham facing Leicester next.

West Ham maintained their place in the Premier League top four by coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Sunderland.

The Hammers trailed to a Jordi Gomez's penalty after Adam Johnson fell dramatically after minimal contact from a James Tomkins challenge but fought back within seven minutes. The goal came from in-form Stewart Downing, who struck a deflected shot from the edge of the box, and both sides had chances to win it. Jozy Altidore's missed a sitter from close-range while Aaron Cresswell saw a one-on-one chance saved by Costel Pantilimon. West Ham stay fourth while Sunderland drop to 15th.
