Sunderland officially announced the signing of free-agent winger Steven Pienaar to a contract through the end of the season.
The 34-year-old made his club debut against Middlebrough as a substitute in the first half after reuniting this week with manager David Moyes, who signed him from Borussia Dortmund back in 2008 and again in 2012 after a failed stint at Tottenham. But the Toffees released the South African international this summer once his contract ran out after an injury-plagued season last year in which he made only four Premier League appearances. It's the end of an era at Everton this summer, and not just the Roberto Martinez era, as the club released its retained and released list.

Among the names on the list, Everton confirmed that winger Steven Pienaar, midfielder Leon Osman and long-time defender Tony Hibbert will not see their contracts renewed when they expire this summer, making the trio available on free transfers. Hibbert has been in the first team for 16 seasons after coming up through the club's academy in the 1990's, but the 35-year-old featured in only one game this year due in part to injuries. Osman, also 35, arrived in the first team at the same time as Hibbert while Pienaar has been at the club since 2007.

Roberto Martinez revealed that Steven Pienaar has been "working really well" and the 33-year-old (who is yet to feature this season) "should be available" for this weekends’ FA Cup tie against Dagenham.

Martinez was talking ahead of tomorrows’ Capital One cup semi-final against Manchester City in which the Everton boss confirmed that his side suffered no fresh problems following the draw with Tottenham on Sunday. Phil Jagielka is also expected to be involved on Saturday after his recent recovery from a knee ligament injury. "I wouldn’t say he is ready to play 90 minutes (on Wednesday). Probably the weekend will be a better target." James McCarthy could be back before the end of January after suffering a recurrence of a groin injury during the defeat to Stoke City in game week nineteen.

Roberto Martinez expressed his excitement at the prospect of having Steven Pienaar back to full strength. The winger played 60 minutes for the U21 side this week as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Martinez didn't say when Pienaar would return, but the winger will likely need one more outing before coming back into the first team. "In a way, we had to grow as a squad to find solutions because we rely immensely on that sort of link-up. It’s been pleasing to see how we have adapted but it will be fantastic to have Steven fully fit and to stay fit for the rest of the season." Pienaar has not featured for the club since last season, but his return would give the Toffees a handful of wingers to choose from in their preferred 4-2-3-1 setup.

Steven Pienaar will miss the start of the Premier League season due to a thigh injury.

Pienaar is currently being assessed and we don't have an estimated return date for him, but he is fully expected to miss the start of the season. Roberto Martinez praised the work Pienaar was doing in pre-season and called it a "shame" for him to get injured at this point. Pienaar didn't play much last year and he'll have a hard time earning a regular spot in the rotation after missing the start of the season. Avoid him in fantasy for the time being.

Roberto Martinez has stated that Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar is "very unlikely" to make the squad for their match against Manchester United on Sunday.

It looks like one more week for the South African international. Kevin Mirallas returned and scored for the Toffees last weekend, so Martinez has two in-form wide men to name to his XI with Aaron Lennon also playing well. Martinez also went on to confirm that Romelu Lukaku will be ready to go, much to the dismay of Red Devil fans.

With a big match in store this weekend against Manchester United, Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman will be monitored during the week, casting a doubt on their chances of making Roberto Martinez's XI.

Pienaar had an extended layoff due to a knee injury but looked sharp in his shift against Swansea City, when he came on inside the first half hour of the match to replace the injured Osman. Neither were involved in the victory over Burnley in their latest outing but neither have been ruled out yet for the clash with the Red Devils. With Kevin Mirallas back and scoring and Aaron Lennon perhaps their best player on the pitch in the past month, the wide positions may be spoken for regardless/

Everton injury problems are mounting as Roberto Martinez confirms Steven Pienaar is the latest casualty added to the Toffees treatment table.

Pienaar is struggling with a persistent knee problem which is likely to keep the player sidelined for around 2/3 weeks and this setback places the Everton midfield in crisis having already lost Darron Gibson [2 weeks], Leon Osman [no return date] and James McCarthy [doubtful for GW20] to injury leaving only three established first team players – Ross Barkley, Gareth Barry and Aidan McGeady. Martinez also confirmed that goalkeeper Tim Howard could be out for around six weeks while he is unable to give anything definitive on Phil Jagielka who is being assessed daily. Tony Hibbert is also out but John Stones – having just returned from ankle surgery – is close after taking a knock to the same ankle.

Steven Pienaar joins an ever-growing list of Everton players heading into tomorrow's match against West Ham United, making things difficult for fantasy managers in possession of one or more Toffees.

Check our injury page to get a full run down on the rash of injuries that have hit Goodison Park, but based on reports Friday, Gareth Barry appears to be the only regular that is has been all but ruled out and the rest of the doubts are only minor, including Pienaar's knee. Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley are among the few without an injury issue heading into tomorrow, and represent your best investment options from the Toffees.

The groin injury Steven Pienaar picked up during Everton's match last weekend with Arsenal has ruled him out of this weekend's bout with Chelsea.

Pienaar was only on the pitch for nine minutes before being forced off with the dreaded groin injury. According to Roberto Martinez, the injury "will take a little time" to heal, so with the international break coming after this weekend's match, Pienaar could be back in contention for Week 4. Aiden McGeady will likely get another start as he has benefited from time missed by both Pienaar and Kevin Mirallas in the early going.

Steven Pienaar and Lacina Traore have both trained this week and Roberto Martinez indicated that he expects both players to make this weekend's squad when Everton travel to Hull City.

Pienaar has missed the Toffees' last ten matches and it has been a disappointing campaign for the veteran midfielder though his only league goal this season came in the reverse fixture with the Tigers so perhaps he can end things on a positive note. Traore has been a non-factor in his loan spell from AS Monaco, having not played a minute in league action and making just one appearance in a cup competition.

Steven Pienaar was left out of the squad for Everton's match against West Brom on Monday night due to a groin injury, and will be assessed over the coming days, making him a doubt for now for the Merseyside Derby.

The injury was actually obtained in the match against Norwich City two gameweeks ago, and Pienaar was unable to shake it off in time for West Brom. According to Roberto Martinez, Pienaar was very close to making the squad for the Baggies match, so it seems reasonable to assume, barring any setbacks, that he will be back in the XI for the showdown with Liverpool.

Steven Pienaar, who was a question mark to make the squad for the Hull City match returning from injury, came on as a substitute and scored the game-winning goal for the Toffees, as Everton win 2-1.

Pienaar made Roberto Martinez look like a genius. After coming on for Leon Osman in the 56th minute, he joined a quick-forming attack that saw him score after 10 seconds of pitch time. It was his first touch of the ball. Martinez stated in his press conference heading into this match that he thought Pienaar may not quite be fit enough yet, but it appears he may have had a change of heart over the past 48 hours. Pienaar joins a growing list of Everton players worth fantasy consideration.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez stated during his press conference for the Toffee's upcoming match with Hull City Tigers that in regards to Steven Pienaar, "I think this weekend could be too early but I do expect him to be fully fit for next Saturday."

It is normally unwise to invest in a player returning from injury, especially of the hamstring variety and this news should be enough to squash any ideas of selecting Pienaar for this gameweek. With Ross Barkley still priced at about 8m less, there isn't much reason to opt for Pienaar regardless, unless he hits a massive run of form.

In an interview with Everton's official website, Roberto Martinez stated it is too soon to make a call on Steve Pienaar's availability for their match with Hull City, but that the midfielder is back in training and in contention for the match.

Pienaar has been held out of action for over a month with a hamstring injury. Normally a nailed on starter when fit, without any definitive clarity on his availability, he is too risky for fantasy selection for Gameweek 8 despite the plus matchup.
