Crystal Palace is off to another inauspicious start with a 3-0 loss to Premier League newboys Huddersfield Town.
The Eagles put themselves behind the eight-ball from early on with Joel Ward scoring an own goal in the 23rd minute. During a scramble inside the Palace penalty area, Huddersfield defender Mathias Jorgensen fizzed a ball back in front of the goalkeeper's box, which hit Ward and caromed into the goal. Palace found itself down two just a couple minutes later with a goal from Steve Mounie, who the club struggled to contain after his two-goal showing. Ultimately, Palace looks to be lacking at the back with two young players in Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Jairo Riedewald as part of the back three. After missing out on Bruno Martins-Indi and Mamadou Sakho, Saturday's result might jumpstart the search for a defender. Sat, Aug 12, 2017 12:10:00 PM

Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward has returned to training following a knee injury and could be in contention for a return in Week 10 against Leicester City.

Crystal Palace assistant manager Keith Millen confirmed the right-back has a chance to play this weekend after missing the last five league matches: "Wardy did some the training with us on Tuesday and is full training on Thursday. I think, medically, he would be OK (to play on Saturday), it's whether we feel he's done enough training work really." Ward likely won't return to the starting lineup immediately, but once he is fully fit the right-back position is his, meaning Martin Kelly will return to the bench.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew confirmed defender Joel Ward will miss the West Ham match with a knee injury.

Ward will now miss his fifth consecutive league game with a knee injury he picked up in training over a month ago. Martin Kelly will likely continue to fill in at right-back in the absence of Ward, who is still second on the team with two goals scored. West Ham has yet to be shut out this season, with the prospect of a clean sheet for Crystal Palace looking increasingly less likely.

Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward could miss up-to a month after picking up a knee injury in training this week.

Alan Pardew confirmed the absence of Ward for the crunch clash with City this weekend during Thursdays’ press-conference "He will definitely be out for three to four weeks, so that’s a blow to us." However there was better news for the Eagles as Mile Jedinak [hamstring] and Yohan Cabaye [groin] re-joined the group in training today. Marouane Chamakh "is not quite there yet" after the striker – who has struggled with hamstring problems all year – suffered an adductor tear which will keep him out for another 3-weeks. Joe Ledley is being assessed after the Wales midfielder was injured while training with his international team mates. Julian Speroni played for the U21s midweek and comes back into contention.

Crystal Palace put up a strong fight but they couldn't prevent Arsenal leaving Selhurst Park with three points.

The Gunners went up early on an Olivier Giroud goal before Joel Ward's exceptional strike from distance after James McArthur laid it back to him to draw the score level. Unfortunately, the level score wouldn't last as Palace were guilty of poor defending as Alexis Sanchez shouldn't have been allowed to get a head to the ball that he headed toward the Palace goal. Damien Delaney deflected the ball past the keeper for the final tally and a 2-1 loss for the home side.

Joel Ward racked up the phantom defending points last season but hasn't been as prolific this season in general but he turned back the clock against Chelsea with a solid effort.

Ward was so solid in picking up phantom points that we named a phantom point All-Star team after him in the Monday Morning Manager column. Ward hasn't really lived up to that honor this season due to fewer opportunities and lesser production when he does actually start. Against the new champions, Ward looked like he did last season with four passes intercepted, three tackles won, and a blocked shot on defense as well as a corner won and a successful cross going forward.

Joel Ward looks to be losing his race for fitness after the Crystal Palace defender missed last weekends’ home defeat to Hull City after picking up a shin injury in training.

Alan Pardew was "hopeful" when discussing his involvement in GW35 but the defender who had been an ever-present in the league this season is yet to join the group, although there may be a possibility for a return on Friday or Saturday. However the squad will be boosted as Marouane Chamakh and Frazier Campbell [both hamstring] trained fully this week with a view of making the match-day 18. The Eagles’ have lost two consecutive games and with Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Chung-Yong Lee back to full fitness Pardew could look to shake things up ahead of a visit to champions elect Chelsea.

Joel Ward had a monster fantasy day that included a goal to help Crystal Palace to an easy 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers.

Ward could have had clean sheet points added to his impressive score in the Yahoo game were it not for a ridiculous 40 yard cannon by Matt Phillips late on. Regardless, investors will be pleased. Palace took command thanks to the pace of their wide midfielders as Yannick Bolasie would tee up two goals to Wilfried Zaha and James McArthur respectively by beating the young Darnell Furlong down the left and sending in crosses through the mouth of goal. Zaha would pick out Ward for the other goal, as he shook off defenders on the edge of the area to find him. Ward then sent a left footed wormburner that curled inside the far post at a snail's pace. The Eagles attack is buzzing right now, though Zaha and Jason Puncheon may spend the week in the physio room due to a collision with the post on the opening score.

Crystal Palace are launching a £3million bid for Leeds right-back Sam Byram.

19-year old Byram has been interesting a host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, so Palace would do well to get a deal done as quickly as possible. Byram was a regular starter for Leeds this season, playing on the right of defence, but also moving into midfield on occasions. His potential arrival would provide some stiff competition for current right-back Joel Ward, who had a hugely impressive debut season for Palace.
