Arsenal today announced that Swiss international defender Johan Djourou has made a permanent move to Hamburg.
Djourou spent last season on loan at the German side and today a permanent move was completed seeing the player leave Arsenal after 11 years at the club he joined as a 16-year-old. While Djourou hasn't figured at Arsenal since the middle of the 2012-13 season, the move further depletes a position where the Gunners are thin and threatening to get thinner with the rumored departure of Thomas Vermaelen drawing close. Recalling Djourou as a fourth option at center back wasn't ideal but it was at least AN option. Now it is not which means the club will likely have to bring in at least one more central defender before the transfer deadline if Vermaelen does leave. Aug 7 - 4:50 PM

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou, finding playing time hard to come by, has moved to Hamburg on loan for the 2013-14 season.

This is a good move for both player and club. Djourou, who had a few bright moments a few seasons back, has seen his progress halted by injury and lack of playing time. His only hope of regaining any momentum was a move elsewhere to re-establish himself as a player. In doing so he can either re-insert himself into the longer term conversation at Arsenal or earn himself a move elsewhere and the club at least some transfer fee in doing so.
