Crystal Palace has received a major boost with the return of winter signing Patrick van Aanholt following an ankle injury.
The former Sunderland product has been a staple of Sam Allardyce's setup, as both a left-wing and a left-back, since arriving from Sunderland in January. But the Dutch international has missed the last month of action after sustaining an ankle injury. And more good news looks to be on the way with Loic Remy nearly back in training. Said Allardyce: "Patrick van Aanholt's been back in training and he'll join up with us. That's about it from our injured players recovering. Loic Remy's nearly there, he's nearly back in full training. So we're still waiting for James Tomkins and Scott Dann is looking pretty long-term now." Apr 15 - 12:39 AM

Crystal Palace made it back-to-back wins at the Hawthorns this afternoon to climb out of the bottom three, but the victory came at a cost as Patrick van Aanholt was forced off through injury.

Sam Allardyce was full of praise for his side after a fully deserved win on the road took the Eagles three-points clear of the relegation places: "We did the basics so well and the quality of both goals topped it. West Brom barely had a shot on goal." Palace will now head to a warm-weather training camp full of confidence with a free weekend coming up: "We can relax, chill out, do some training in the heat and get ready for the big push," said the former England manager. However, wing-back van Aanholt is likely to remain at the clubs’ training ground after suffering an ankle injury: "He twisted it. Ankle ligaments. We'll see about him. We don't have a game for two weeks so he has that time to recover."

Patrick Van Aanholt scored as Crystal Palace moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Crystal Palace started the match with the better attacking chances and found the breakthrough on 34th minutes when Middlesbrough failed to clear a strike by Yohan Cabaye. The misplayed clearance fell to Van Aanholt, who touched onto to his left foot and popped a low strike into the bottom of the net, past a sprawling Victor Valdes. The victory for Palace was their first under Sam Allardyce and lifts the club to 17th place, on 22 points.

Sunderland left-back Patrick van Aanholt has been officially confirmed by Crystal Palace in a £14 million move.

The 26-year-old joins the club on a four-and-a-half-year contract after four-and-a-half years at Sunderland. The former Chelsea product becomes Crystal Palace's second signing of the winter window as the club has now spent £26 million on left-backs with the addition of Jeffrey Schlupp from Leicester City. Van Aanholt has played in 21 Premier League matches this season, scoring three goals, and now reunites with former manager Sam Allardyce. "I am delighted that Patrick has joined us," Allardyce said. "We had great success together at Sunderland where he was instrumental in keeping them in the Premier League last season. He will add pace and energy to our team, has strong defensive qualities and has the added ability to score and create goals."

Patrick van Aanholt's 49th-minute goal was all Sunderland needed in a hard-fought 1-0 win against Watford on Saturday.

The Dutch international has made a name for himself as one of the league's premier attacking fullbacks, scoring his third goal of the season while the club's forwards couldn't manage much against a stingy Watford defense. The three points gives the Black Cats their third win in the past four home matches to bring them just one point from leaving the relegation zone with 17th-place Crystal Palace in their sights. Despite another injury to Jan Kirchhoff, David Moyes pieced together a clean sheet and a victory with the recently fit Fabio Borini while Donald Love got a surprise start at right-back.

Patrick Van Aanholt replaced the seriously injured Jan Kirchoff early in the second half and went on to score the equalizer as Sunderland and West Brom drew 1-1.

It was a surprise omission from the starting line-up for Van Aanholt who has been a regular starter for the Black Cats since Sam Allardyce arrived to manage the club last season. The former Chelsea trainee has been a strong attacker in his time with the club but apparently David Moyes was aiming for more defensive solidity. Down a goal, he brought PVA in for Kirchoff when the latter was hurt and it worked out brilliantly. Van Aanholt didn't exactly get the contact he wanted on Duncan Watmore's cross but it worked and the Black Cats picked up only their second point of the season.

The rumors behind Patrick van Aanholt's sudden withdrawal from Sunday's match against Tottenham have been put to rest.

The club mysteriously scratched the left-back less than an hour before the 1-0 loss due to "medical reasons" but manager David Moyes revealed it was due to a heart scan that raised questions about his health. However, van Aanholt reportedly has a chance to play in the League Cup on Wednesday. Said manager David Moyes: "He had the statutory checks with the cardiologists and the FA panel of cardiologists looked at it and advised us really late on Sunday that he should not play until further tests had taken place. We are just surprised that the FA panel didn’t contact me or contact my doctor until 3.55pm on Sunday afternoon."

Patrick Van Aanholt scored in the 71st minute and registered two shots on target in Sunderland's lose to Middlesbrough.

Van Aanholt was the catalyst of Sunderland's second-half resurgence. The fullback deservingly scored his club's lone goal in the Tees-Wear derby. The move started when Duncan Watmore stung a strike from outside the box, which Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Guzan failed to hold. Van Aanholt was first to react to the ensuing rebound as his charging run put him in perfect position to finish from close range. Van Aanholt continues to be a smart play in all fantasy formats because of his tendency to be involved in Sunderland's attack. Last season he scored five goals in 33 appearances.

Sunderland made it four wins on the spin against Dijon on Wednesday, but the victory came at a cost after a muscular problem forced Patrick van Aanholt off early in the second half.

Robbie Stockdale confirmed van Aanholt "felt some groin tightness" although based on initial reports, his withdrawal appears to be precautionary: "There is absolutely no major issues," revealed the first team coach. "Whether we risk him on Saturday will depend on how he settles down over the next couple of days." Jermain Defoe is certain to miss out though, with the striker a doubt for the remainder of the preseason programme after suffering a thigh strain in training. However, and despite ongoing tests, the club remain confident he will be ready to face Manchester City in game week one. "At the moment it’s probably too early to say and we don’t think it’s anything serious, but obviously with a player like Jermain you don’t to take any risks."

Patrick van Aanholt continued his furious goalscoring form with the club's only goal in a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light.

The left-back has now scored a goal in each of the last four Premier League matches in a remarkable run of games for a defender. Van Aanholt made a blazing run down the left before Fabio Borini spotted him with a perfect pass that he swept past Artur Boruc for the goal. However, Sunderland couldn't manage much more than the equalizer after giving up a goal to Benik Afobe in the first half. The point wasn't enough to bring the Black Cats out of the relegation zone, but it puts them just one point back of rival Newcastle and two away from 17th-place Swansea City.

Sunderland went on the scoreboard first with a goal by Patrick van Aanholt, but Tottenham would score four times thereafter to hand the Black Cats a 4-1 loss.

Sam Allardyce handed Jordan Pickford his first Premier League start between the sticks and the youngster looked pretty good in the opening half, helping keep Spurs from netting first. Sunderland then took advantage of a rare chance when van Aanholt was set up with a brilliant through ball by Adam Johnson and the attacking fullback beat Hugo Lloris at the near post. Unfortunately for the Black Cats, they allowed Tottenham to equalize just 90 seconds later to make it level at halftime. Any chances of a positive result were dashed in the second half, as Spurs began putting their chances in. Jan Kirchhoff was handed his debut as a second half substitute and all he was able to do was allow a Christian Eriksen shot deflect off of him for Tottenham's third goal. There was no magic for Jermain Defoe today as he faced his former club.

Patrick Van Aanholt missed a great chance provided by Jack Rodwell late in the second half and Sunderland went on to concede again and lose 3-1 at the Emirates.

Van Aanholt was impressive for portions of the match but he will be very disappointed with his finishing after Rodwell provided him a great chance to even the tie. Sunderland created good chances for much of the afternoon and the 5-3-2 formation that Sam Allardyce has been using in recent matches with Van Aanholt and DeAndre Yedlin providing pace at the wingback spots has been more effective than anything Sunderland had tried earlier in the season. Arsenal were too much but there is hope for both Van Aanholt and Sunderland in this formation.

Goals from Patrick Van Aanholt and Duncan Watmore led Sunderland to victory in a 2-0 win against Stoke City that led the club out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

Van Aanholt scored his first goal of the season to give Sunderland a lead the club would never relinquish in the 82nd minute after he gathered a free kick and beat Jack Butland for his first goal of the season. Then Duncan Watmore added a second minutes later to down 10-man Stoke City, who were burdened with Ryan Shawcross' sending off in the 50th minute for earning a second yellow card. With the win, Sunderland earned its third win of the season and second in a row to give the club 12 points as Sam Allardyce continues to turn around the Black Cats.

Despite Sunderland's struggles Patrick van Aanholt is still returning solid fantasy points in the Yahoo format.

Van Aanholt may be playing for a struggling team but he's doing his best to keep fantasy managers happy. Returns of 5, 7, 8 and 11 points over the past few game-weeks suggest a return to form, with attacking contributions making up for the lack of clean sheets achieved by the Black Cats. The defender lost his place in the starting XI towards the end of Gus Poyet's reign but should be certain of regular start under fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat and is a genuine option in the Yahoo format if you have some spare cash in the bank.

The Black Cats played better under Dick Advocaat but still lost as West Ham scored a late winner.

Sunderland currently sit just above the relegation zone and the arrival of a new manager wasn't enough to change their fortunes. Patrick Van Aanholt did his best to put the Black Cats on the board but Adrian parried his long range drive that represented Sunderland's best chance on the day.
