Goals from Patrick Van Aanholt and Duncan Watmore led Sunderland to victory in a 2-0 win against Stoke City that led the club out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.
Van Aanholt scored his first goal of the season to give Sunderland a lead the club would never relinquish in the 82nd minute after he gathered a free kick and beat Jack Butland for his first goal of the season. Then Duncan Watmore added a second minutes later to down 10-man Stoke City, who were burdened with Ryan Shawcross' sending off in the 50th minute for earning a second yellow card. With the win, Sunderland earned its third win of the season and second in a row to give the club 12 points as Sam Allardyce continues to turn around the Black Cats. Nov 28 - 1:32 PM

Despite Sunderland's struggles Patrick van Aanholt is still returning solid fantasy points in the Yahoo format.

Van Aanholt may be playing for a struggling team but he's doing his best to keep fantasy managers happy. Returns of 5, 7, 8 and 11 points over the past few game-weeks suggest a return to form, with attacking contributions making up for the lack of clean sheets achieved by the Black Cats. The defender lost his place in the starting XI towards the end of Gus Poyet's reign but should be certain of regular start under fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat and is a genuine option in the Yahoo format if you have some spare cash in the bank.

The Black Cats played better under Dick Advocaat but still lost as West Ham scored a late winner.

Sunderland currently sit just above the relegation zone and the arrival of a new manager wasn't enough to change their fortunes. Patrick Van Aanholt did his best to put the Black Cats on the board but Adrian parried his long range drive that represented Sunderland's best chance on the day.

Patrick van Aanholt marked his return from injury with the winning goal as Sunderland beat Leeds in the FA Cup third round at the Stadium of Light.

van Aanholt had been out since early November due to a dislocated shoulder suffered against Crystal Palace, but he returned to the line-up to grab the winner against Leeds to push his side through to round four of the FA Cup. The Dutch defender was a top defensive performer in the Yahoo fantasy game through the first three months of the season and he should be back on your radar in the coming weeks.

Patrick van Aanholt will end his ever-present record this weekend when Sunderland take on Everton at the Stadium of Light after the defender left Selhurst Park on Monday with his arm immobilised in a sling.

Despite the Black Cats struggling defensively in recent times van Aanholt has been the stand-out player impressing since arrival from Chelsea during the summer on a season long loan deal. His departure just before half-time - on a stretcher - due to a dislocated shoulder allowed Wes Brown to make an early appearance and it was another own-goal by the centre-back which provided Crystal Palace a lifeline before Gomez and Fletcher sealed the win. Jack Rodwell [calf] who missed out in game week ten is expected to return to training this week and will be back in contention for the visit of the Toffees.

Sunderland played to a sloppy scoreless draw with Swansea City, but the clean sheet adds to a productive inaugural season in the Premier League for Patrick van Aanholt.

If you haven't had the fortune of investing in van Aanholt yet this season, I highly recommend it. It is so choice. (That reference is 25 years old now and I don't feel an ounce of guilt in using it) Anyway, Sunderland play at home again next week to Stoke City and whether it is a clean sheet, attacking returns, or what, van Aanholt is sure to benefit in some capacity. He still remains relatively inexpensive in the Yahoo game but that won't last forever.

Sunderland's Patrick Van Aanholt continues to impress both on the pitch and in fantasy.

Sunderland clean sheet against Burnley helped van Aanholt to another double digit fantasy return, but his performance was far more than just that. The ex-Chelsea man was unlucky not to score the winner after his long-range shot hit the post before rebounding off the keeper to go inches wide. In addition, the left-back picked up defensive points for tackles won and passes intercepted, and should remain close to the top of your defensive considerations every week while he continues to display this consistent form.

Sunderland's new signing Patrick van Aanholt put in a terrific display on debut and it resulted in big fantasy returns.

van Aanholt was signed from Chelsea in July, slotted straight in to the left-back position for Sunderland's opening game against West Brom and instantly looks like he could be a fantasy hit in the Yahoo game. The defender intercepted a phenomenal eight passes and also picked up an assist for Seb Larsson's late equaliser after great work down the flank. 14 points is an excellent score without a clean sheet, he remains affordable and is only 1% owned - jump on the bandwagon!

Sunderland have signed Netherlands international Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

This is an important deal for Sunderland, who had no recognised left-back in their squad after Marcos Alonso's loan deal ended back in May. van Aanholt never made the grade at Chelsea, spending the past two seasons out on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, but he is highly regarded in Holland and very nearly made the Dutch World Cup squad. It will be interesting to see how he copes back in the Premier League, as he could be a fantasy option worth keeping an eye on if he secures a starting spot at the Stadium of Light.

Chelsea have decided to let Patrick van Aanholt, Gael Kakuta, and Thorgan Hazard go on season long loans to gain valuable playing experience.

Van Aanholt and Kakuta are going to Vitesse Arnhem and Hazard is headed to Zulte Waregem. The players are for Chelsea's future and it is probably good they are going to gain valuable playing time. Minutes will be hard to come by at Chelsea and these youngsters should be happy for the opportunity.

Chelsea defender Patrick Van Aanholt is returning to his home team Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long loan.

Chelsea are very strong at left back with Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand, who are both capable of starting in the Premier League. The Blues will likely hold on to Aanholt for a while and eventually let him compete with Bertrand once Ashley Cole leaves or retires. For now, he's back in the Netherlands.
