Middle Tennessee running back Phillip Tanner has had an up-and-down career marred by injuries but in the final game of his collegiate career, he put it all together for a big performance.  Despite his team losing to Miami of Ohio, Tanner had a good game with 11 carries for 87 yards and two scores while also catching five passes for another 34 yards.
A couple of years ago, Tanner had 15 rushing touchdowns but just never could reach that pinnacle again. Fri, Jan 7, 2011 04:30:00 PM

Tanner has never reached the level of performance he showed two years ago when he rushed for 15 yards but he shined tonight.

“I don’t feel like we should’ve gone out there thinking we had to do other things because Dasher was there,” Middle Tennessee State running Phillip Tanner said. “Dwight Dasher is Dwight Dasher. He is a great player and I have the utmost respect for him, but for me to say that we were more excited to play because we’ve got Dwight Dasher is degrading to (Logan) Kilgore and (Jeff) Murphy. ...I’m going to play my game no matter who is out there at quarterback. To say that we were a better team with Dasher out there, well, I don’t know."

Woah.  We can only hope that Tanner is just venting some frustration over the loss to Troy and tired of answer questions about his formerly suspended quarterback. If he believes they are not a better team with Dasher calling the shots, that's a problem.

Middle Tennessee is moving on without Dwight Dasher and tonight it was with a grinding ground assault.  The team rushed for 353 yards and seven touchdowns as they beat Austin Peay 56-33.  Phillip Tanner led the assault with 18 carries for 127 yards and three touchdowns while D.D. Kyles had 76 yards and two scores.

Tanner is someone to keep an eye on as he ran for 15 touchdowns two years ago.

Middle Tennessee State running backs Phillip Tanner and Ben Cunningham are competing for the starting role.  "(Tanner) has worked extremely hard. He has been pushed by Benny," Stockstill said. "I look at it as Phillip is 1, and Benny is 1-A. I have confidence in both those guys.  D.D. Kyles has been slowed by a hamstring injury and appears out of the running.

The big question is will the Blue Raiders lean more on Tanner and Cunningham if quarterback Dwight Dasher is unable to return, or will the unit as a whole struggle without him?  The answer to that question won't be determined until they strap them on in less than a week.

Middle Tennessee State running back Phillip Tanner (knee) is back at spring practice and has the words "I'm back" written in black letters on the tape on his arm.  "That was to tell the guys on defense, let them know that I'm back out there and I'm ready," Tanner said.

As we mentioned yesterday, Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill is looking for one of his running backs to hit the 1000-yard mark this season.  Add Tanner to your late round sleeper list.

"Ideally, I want a 1,000-yard rusher from the tailback spot and around 600 or 700 yards from the quarterback," Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill said.  Stockstill also mentioned that he is hoping running back Phillip Tanner has "his best year."

Tanner is coming off a knee injury that cost him nearly all of the 2009 season.  He has a good shot a becoming that 1000-yard back Stocksitll craves.  But he is going to have to wrestle carries away from quarterback Dwight Dasher and running back D.D. Kyles.

MTSU's Phillip Tanner has expanded his role in spring ball to include catching the ball out of the backfield.

Offensive Coordinator Tony Franklin will have the Blue Raiders spread out in four-wide sets much of the time. If Tanner is solid in pass blocking, he will be on the field for most of the offensive plays. He's a solid fantasy player as the most legitimate running back on the roster.

Middle Tennessee State running back Phillip Tanner did not practice on Wednesday due to a strained hamstring.

Tanner is not a household name, but he did have 17 touchdowns in 2008. Hamstring injuries can be finicky, but he should be ready to go this fall.
