Phillip Tanner had a big night rushing for Middle Tennessee as he finished with 150 yards and a touchdown against Florida Atlantic.
“I don’t feel like we should’ve gone out there thinking we had to do other things because Dasher was there,” Middle Tennessee State running Phillip Tanner said. “Dwight Dasher is Dwight Dasher. He is a great player and I have the utmost respect for him, but for me to say that we were more excited to play because we’ve got Dwight Dasher is degrading to (Logan) Kilgore and (Jeff) Murphy. ...I’m going to play my game no matter who is out there at quarterback. To say that we were a better team with Dasher out there, well, I don’t know."
Middle Tennessee is moving on without Dwight Dasher and tonight it was with a grinding ground assault. The team rushed for 353 yards and seven touchdowns as they beat Austin Peay 56-33. Phillip Tanner led the assault with 18 carries for 127 yards and three touchdowns while D.D. Kyles had 76 yards and two scores.
Middle Tennessee State running backs Phillip Tanner and Ben Cunningham are competing for the starting role. "(Tanner) has worked extremely hard. He has been pushed by Benny," Stockstill said. "I look at it as Phillip is 1, and Benny is 1-A. I have confidence in both those guys. D.D. Kyles has been slowed by a hamstring injury and appears out of the running.
Middle Tennessee State running back Phillip Tanner (knee) is back at spring practice and has the words "I'm back" written in black letters on the tape on his arm. "That was to tell the guys on defense, let them know that I'm back out there and I'm ready," Tanner said.
"Ideally, I want a 1,000-yard rusher from the tailback spot and around 600 or 700 yards from the quarterback," Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill said. Stockstill also mentioned that he is hoping running back Phillip Tanner has "his best year."
