Stanford running back Jeremy Stewart will be back for another year and fellow running back Usua Amanam will get a look at cornerback this spring.
Stewart having another year of eligibility provides good depth, but essentially the only way the ball is coming out of Stepfan Taylor's hands will be due to injury. Wed, Feb 23, 2011 08:00:00 AM

Stanford running back Jeremy Stewart was not in uniform during yesterday's practice.

He is still nursing an ankle injury and is doubtful for this weekend's contest. Look for Stepfan Taylor to lead the team in carries again against Wake Forest.

Stanford RB Jeremy Stewart suffered an apparent ankle injury in last week's win over Sacramento State.  He had five carries for 21 yards and a touchdown before limping off the field.  He is questionable for this weekend's showdown with UCLA.

The Cardinal backfield is hard to gauge right now, but if Stewart is out then it might be worth rolling the dice on Stepfan Taylor this weekend.  The Bruins did give up 313 yards rushing last week to Kansas State.

Yesterday's game didn't give any indication if anyone in the Stanford backfield is going to emerge as a viable fantasy option this season.  Jeremy Stewart started and had five carries for 21 yards and a touchdown.

The fact that he only carried the ball five times has to be concerning for fantasy owners. The rest of the backfield went as follows: Stepfan Taylor (3 carries for 16 yards and a 59-yard receiving touchdown), Tyler Gaffney (eight carries for 33 yards and a touchdown, Usua Amanam (eight carries for 50 yards), and Anthony Wilkerson (seven carries for 27 yards and a touchdown).  This is definitely a situation to avoid until further notice.

Stanford RB Jeremy Stewart is leading the race to replace Toby Gerhart.  His ability to pass protect is what is giving him the edge right now.  The 6-foot-1, 218 pound senior averaged 6.3 yards per carry during an injury plagued 2009 campaign.

Stepfan Taylor was thought to be leading the charge heading into the fall based on his performance last year as the backup to Gerhart.  Don't count him out yet as we are still early in the process and this situation has committee written all over it.

Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh said running back Jeremy Stewart "has separated himself in some ways as a pass protector and runner." Coach Harbaugh went on to say Stepfan Taylor "has been outstanding as well."

Keep in mind Tyler Gaffney, a front runner to take over the starting job, has spent most of spring with the baseball team.  And it will probably take all three of them to replace Toby Gerhart.  We'll likely have to wait to see if someone can separate himself from the pack this fall.
