South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia failed a substance abuse test last week and was dismissed from the team Tuesday.
The tumultuous tenure of Garcia has come to an end. He was suspended by coach Steve Spurrier on multiple occasions for various conduct-related issues during his years with the Gamecocks, the most recent during the spring. Garcia was reinstated in time for fall drills, but was not guaranteed the No. 1 QB job. Connor Shaw started the opener against East Carolina before Garcia took over. The fifth-year senior struggled through a 4-0 start and ultimately lost his job to Shaw, who is now the clear-cut top signal caller in Columbia. Tue, Oct 11, 2011 02:51:00 PM

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia should be back under center against visiting Auburn on Saturday.

Can you imagine the crowd reaction if Garcia throws a couple of early picks? A four-interception day, such as what he experienced at home against Vandy last week, is fresh in everybody's minds. So is a QB efficiency rating that is 99th. Still, Steve Spurrier will likely have his veteran signal caller work through these issues than hand the keys to Conner Shaw. A 4-0 record helps in the decision making.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier released a depth chart Monday that lists Stephen Garcia as the No. 1 quarterback.

That didn’t take long, did it? With Conner Shaw completing only three passes for 21 yards and the Gamecocks falling behind East Carolina 17-0 in the second quarter Saturday, Garcia looked like a savior coming off the bench. He accounted for three touchdowns and calmed the offense following a turnover-plagued start. With Georgia coming up Saturday – a Bulldogs team that is perhaps looking to save the job of coach Mark Richt – Garcia has a chance to put any remaining debate to rest.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier may wait until Friday to name either senior Stephen Garcia or sophomore Connor Shaw as his starter against East Carolina.

Spurrier was known for shuffling quarterbacks during his championship days at Florida. At South Carolina, Garcia has been his man. The senior has started 30 consecutive games and led the Gamecocks to the SEC title game last season. He has certainly had his off-field troubles and Spurrier is sending the message that nothing is guaranteed, especially if Shaw is performing well in practice, which he is. Speaking of off-field troubles, No. 3 QB Andrew Clifford will miss at least the first couple of games after crashing his moped.

After being banned from participating in all team activities last April, Garcia is officially back with the Gamecocks.

Coach Steve Spurrier said Monday that Garcia had done all that was asked of him following his most recent suspension, saying "he has changed his lifestyle." Spurrier said that Garcia would have to compete for the starting QB job, but, barring another suspension, Garcia should be the Gamecock's starter when the 2011 season begins.

Despite being suspended twice this spring and four times overall (maybe five, I've lost count) Stephen Garcia still sits atop South Carolina's post-spring depth chart.

I wonder if Garcia cracked a beer when he heard the news? There is a asterisk next to his name as he's still suspended indefinitely, but that appears to be just a technicality.

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has shed his sling and was throwing late into practice this Wednesday.  Garcia is ready to play this Saturday as the Gamecocks face Auburn in the SEC Championship.

Garcia lit up the Tigers' defense last time they met but couldn't come away with the win.  Look for a hotly contested game between these two.

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia  hurt his thumb on his right (throwing) hand and left shoulder last week against Clemson.

Garcia is expected take some time off from practice to rest up for the SEC Championship game against Auburn.

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia had a huge passing day against Vanderbilt as he completed 31-of-39 passes for 355 yards, two scores, and an interception.

Garcia is playing markedly better than before but is still only worth a start in SEC-only leagues.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier was hoping the 'good' Stephen Garcia would play against Alabama and with 201 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-20 passing, it is safe to say he was there.

Garcia has really grown as a passer and is a sure-fire starter in SEC leagues.

Despite some pivotal fumbles against Auburn and being benched in favor of Connor Shaw, Stephen Garcia will get the start when the Gamecocks take on Alabama.

Garcia has played exceptionally well this season despite the fumbles and the OBC recognizes that Garcia gives the team the best chance to win.

It seems the South Carolina quarterback situation went from crystal clear to a bit murky.  When asked who would start against Alabama, head coach Steve Spurrier said "I don't know what we'll do...We've got too far to go for (a decision). But we're not going to have competition."

I don't really know what Spurrier's statement means exactly but I think against such a high-profile opponent, you have to go with Stephen Garcia over Connor Shaw.

Stephen Garcia was nearly perfect against Auburn as he completed 15-of-21 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. However two fumbles hurt mightily and led to Connor Shaw's participation in the contest.

Garcia has really matured as a passer and is helped by decent line play and a strong ground game. Hopefully he'll be fine after taking some big hits.

"The guy that is going to play and the guy that's going to finish is who gives us the best chance to win." South Carolina quarterback coach GA Mangus said. "We haven't done a whole lot of hitting the quarterbacks hard, so I think the first game will give us a pretty good idea of where we're at."

Veteran Stephen Garcia is still in a heated battle with freshman Connor Shaw. Both will play in the opener against Southern Miss, but a starter hasn't been named.

Well to the surprise of few, Steve Spurrier has said that he will play both Stephen Garcia and true freshman Connor Shaw at quarterback when the season opens against Southern Miss.  It remains to be seen how much time each quarterback will play.

For owners of Garcia, you better pick up Shaw as you never know who could start.
