In the Rice spring game, running back Sam McGuffie did a little bit of everything as he rushed for 13 yards, caught 69 yards, and even had a 19 yard pass. The top rusher of the day was Jeremy Eddington who had 82 yards on just two carries. Quarterback Taylor McHargue was impressive finishing with 201 yards and a touchdown while former quarterback Taylor Cook excelled at receiver with 82 yards and a score on five receptions.
Rice running back Sam McGuffie hurt the East Carolina defense on the ground and through the air as the Owls rolled the Pirates. McGuffie had 15 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown while also catching three passes for 83 yards and another score.
Sam McGuffie looked a lot like his YouTube videos against Tulsa as he rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.
Rice was beaten badly by rival SMU, but it was not due to Sam McGuffie. The speedy running back carried the ball 20 times for 96 yards and a touchdown while also catching five balls for another 45 yards.
Rice tailback Sam McGuffie gained 97 yards from scrimmage and found paydirt as the Owls were beaten by Baylor.
Sam McGuffie showed why he was such a YouTube sensation in high school by scorching North Texas for 92 yards receiving and a touchdown on six catches. McGuffie was less effective rushing the ball as he mustered just 21 yards on 12 carries.
Rice running back Sam McGuffie was held to 46 rushing yards on 14 carries. He lost seven yards on his only reception.
The running backs where the stars of the show in the last scrimmage for the Rice Owls as Sam McGuffie ran just twice for 31 yards while Charles Ross had an even bigger day with an 18-yard rushing touchdown and two catches for 48 yards and another score. Quarterback Nick Fanuzzi was impressive completing 7-of-10 passes for 93 yards and a score while also adding a score on the ground.
This season Rice is looking to lean heavily on Michigan transfer Sam McGuffie. Head coach David Bailiff says, "We'll try to create a lot of space with him and try to get him the football 25 times a game because he is capable, when you get him the football, of scoring from anywhere on the field."
Rice running back Sam McGuffie and tight end Vance McDonald were impressive during the Owls' spring game. McGuffie took a dump off 65 yards for a score, and McDonald caught five balls for 69 yards and a score.
The Houston Chronicle reports that running back Sam McGuffie scored two touchdowns in Rice's scrimmage.
"We’re going to try to get the ball in (Sam McGuffie's) hands," Rice coach David Bailiff said of the Michigan transfer. "He’s pretty special. We’re going to play him at several different positions." Bailiff went on to say McGuffie could line up at running back or in the slot next season.
Former Michigan running back Sam McGuffie is expected to enroll at Rice this week. Some reports indicate it was to happen on Monday, but we have been unable to confirm that he did indeed register.
