Rice senior RB/WR Sam McGuffie caught five passes for 80 yards against Air Force on Saturday.

In the Rice spring game, running back Sam McGuffie did a little bit of everything as he rushed for 13 yards, caught 69 yards, and even had a 19 yard pass.  The top rusher of the day was Jeremy Eddington who had 82 yards on just two carries.  Quarterback Taylor McHargue was impressive finishing with 201 yards and a touchdown while former quarterback Taylor Cook excelled at receiver with 82 yards and a score on five receptions.

Eddington appears to be the feature back for the Owls while McGuffie excels as a runner/receiver.  This could be the first time since the Chase Clement era that Rice could have some actual fantasy value.

Rice running back Sam McGuffie hurt the East Carolina defense on the ground and through the air as the Owls rolled the Pirates.  McGuffie had 15 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown while also catching three passes for 83 yards and another score.

McGuffie has been the big playmaker that he was expected to be when he transferred from Michigan and showed it against a quality conference opponent.

Sam McGuffie looked a lot like his YouTube videos against Tulsa as he rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. 

McGuffie has not received this type of workload since arriving at Rice but if they decide they want to keep feeding him the ball, he may be a decent start in a pinch.

Rice was beaten badly by rival SMU, but it was not due to Sam McGuffie.  The speedy running back carried the ball 20 times for 96 yards and a touchdown while also catching five balls for another 45 yards.

McGuffie is getting better as the season progresses and the offense is finding ways to get the ball into this talented playmaker's hands.

Rice tailback Sam McGuffie gained 97 yards from scrimmage and found paydirt as the Owls were beaten by Baylor.

McGuffie remains a solid starting option when matchups are right; now that conference play is beginning the matchups will be right often.

Sam McGuffie showed why he was such a YouTube sensation in high school by scorching North Texas for 92 yards receiving and a touchdown on six catches.  McGuffie was less effective rushing the ball as he mustered just 21 yards on 12 carries.

Rice has found the way to best use McGuffie is to get him into open space and it worked well tonight against the Mean Green.  However, McGuffie is still too much of a situational player to merit much consideration in all-120 leagues.

Rice running back Sam McGuffie was held to 46 rushing yards on 14 carries.  He lost seven yards on his only reception.

McGuffie, the Michigan transfer, got caught in the backfield trying to make big plays on occasion.  That may eventually work against Conference USA defenses but not against the Longhorns.  McGuffie did lead the team in rushing attempts, and he should find more running room against North Texas next week.

The running backs where the stars of the show in the last scrimmage for the Rice Owls as Sam McGuffie ran just twice for 31 yards while Charles Ross had an even bigger day with an 18-yard rushing touchdown and two catches for 48 yards and another score.  Quarterback Nick Fanuzzi was impressive completing 7-of-10 passes for 93 yards and a score while also adding a score on the ground.

The Rice offense will not be like the days of Jarrett Dillard and Chase Clement but is on its way.

This season Rice is looking to lean heavily on Michigan transfer Sam McGuffie.  Head coach David Bailiff says, "We'll try to create a lot of space with him and try to get him the football 25 times a game because he is capable, when you get him the football, of scoring from anywhere on the field."

This is great news for McGuffie owners as he should be considered a solid RB2 in any league with that many touches per game.

Rice running back Sam McGuffie and tight end Vance McDonald were impressive during the Owls' spring game. McGuffie took a dump off 65 yards for a score, and McDonald caught five balls for 69 yards and a score.

Both McGuffie and McDonald are expected to be key cogs as the Rice offense looks to return to its 2008 form, when the likes of Clement, Dillard and Casey thrilled fantasy owners.

The Houston Chronicle reports that running back Sam McGuffie scored two touchdowns in Rice's scrimmage.

McGuffie is a sleeper, wildcard and potential fantasy stud all rolled into one.  Of course he could also be a bust.  Take a shot at him on draft day; it's worth the risk.

"We’re going to try to get the ball in (Sam McGuffie's) hands," Rice coach David Bailiff said of the Michigan transfer. "He’s pretty special. We’re going to play him at several different positions."  Bailiff went on to say McGuffie could line up at running back or in the slot next season.

Playing in Conference USA, McGuffie has the opportunity to put up good fantasy numbers. He should be among your late round sleeper candidates on draft day.

Former Michigan running back Sam McGuffie is expected to enroll at Rice this week. Some reports indicate it was to happen on Monday, but we have been unable to confirm that he did indeed register.

McGuffie will have to sit out the 2009 season but is definitely one to keep an eye on for 2010. Running against C-USA defenses may allow McGuffie to put up good fantasy numbers.

Former Michigan running back Sam McGuffie visited Rice University earlier in the week. McGuffie also plans on taking a look at Houston and Texas A&M.

Rice or Houston would be excellent destinations from a fantasy perspective. While both employ pass orientated offenses, McGuffie would be a big fish in a small pond and would likely find open spaces to run.
