Barry Brunetti took the lead as the Rebels’ starting QB, but the battle between him and Bo Wallace is tightening.
With Randall Mackey moving to receiver after starting six games under center last season, Brunetti and Wallace are battling it out while Zach Stoudt (four starts in ’11) has been slowed this spring by a back injury. It would seem with a little more consistency, the job could unquestionably belong to Brunetti heading into fall practice. He started the Egg Bowl against MSU last season and has 44 career pass attempts with the Rebels. Thu, Apr 12, 2012 12:56:00 PM

With Randall Mackey suspended for the Sept. 3 opener, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt named sophomore Barry Brunetti the starting QB.

The arrest of Mackey made things much easier for Nutt and OC David Lee to sort out what was a three-way battle for the starting job. Brunetti will start the opener at home against BYU with Zack Stoudt serving as the backup. Brunetti transferred from West Virginia during the spring and the NCAA waived the one-year wait period due to a family situation. With nine attempts for the Mountaineers last season, he is the only one of the trio to have attempted a pass at the major-college level.
