Michigan head coach Brady Hoke stated senior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint "would be the starter" if the season started today.
"I think there's a clear separation that Fitz is the guy," Hoke said. Toussaint suffered a gruesome broken leg during the school's final home game last season, so his recovery has been very quick. Freshman Drake Johnson has also seen first team reps and is currently the closes to Toussaint, with juniors Justice Hayes and Thomas Rawls as backups. Wed, Aug 21, 2013 09:36:00 AM

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said senior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint has "looked like the Fitz of old" in practice.

Toussaint suffered a broken left leg in November's game against Iowa. He's currently on a mission to reclaim Michigan's starting halfback job. Touted freshman Derrick Green was competing for the gig but injured his ankle at the beginning of camp. He returned to practice last week, but Toussaint may have buried him already. "Derrick is learning about big-time college football," Hoke said. "Like most freshmen, they are highly touted, they are tremendous players and those things, but that next step is a step that's bigger than they may think."

Toussaint suffered a gruesome broken leg during the Wolverines' final home game last season, and beat writer Angelique Chengelis adds the senior was around 80 to 85 percent healthy during spring practice. Expect the school's offense to continue its more traditional look with Devin Gardner at the helm.

Despite recovering from a broken a left leg, Michigan senior RB Fitz Toussaint is not ruling out participating in Spring practice.

"May not be full contact, (but) I will have a helmet on. I will be running gassers with those guys," Toussaint said. His recovery so far is far ahead of schedule, and it is looking more and more likely that Toussaint will challenge for the starting running back spot when the 2013 season opens.

Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson is shocked at how quickly RB Fitzgerald Toussaint is recovering from a broken left leg.

"Saw him running around -- I was shocked," Jackson said. "The kid had a broken leg. Ten years ago, that probably wouldn't have been the case. But he was running around the other day and I don't know if they had him cut, but to me, that's tremendous progress." Jackson added that he now thinks Toussaint will be ready for the start of his senior season.

Michigan junior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint will not participate in spring practice after suffering a broken left leg at the end of the 2012 season.

Toussaint said he expects to be 100 percent by the fall. The broken leg was a gruesome injury, but Michigan has a big need at the running back position and as long as he is healthy, Toussaint has a great chance to separate from the pack.

Michigan junior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint was carted off the field early in Saturday's game against Iowa with a lower left leg injury.

Denard Robinson actually started the game at running back for Michigan, with junior Devin Gardner at quarterback. It appeared Michigan was set to run both Toussaint and Denard plenty, but this could mean even more touches for the latter going forward.

Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges plans to move forward by splitting carries between junior RB Fitzgerald Toussaint and sophomore RB Thomas Rawls.

Due to an early suspension and an inability to claim the lead back role with production, Toussaint's junior campaign has been a letdown. Insert Rawls, who rushed for a team high 16 carries last week against Minnesota. The two expect to receive more carries if senior Denard Robinson is unable to play.

Michigan head coach Brady Hoke declared that he will be more willing to give backup RBs reps when subbing junior Fitzgerald Toussaint out due to their increased experience.

After sitting out the opener, Toussaint has produced a very disappointing season, rushing for 231 yards and four touchdowns on less than 3.3 yards per carry. While senior quarterback Denard Robinson has run through defenses, Toussaint has been consistently held in check, leaving Hoke to possibly give backups, sophomore Thomas Rawls and redshirt freshman Justice Hayes, more often.
