After suffering a knee injury and otherwise struggling throughout his freshman season, Savon Huggins is competing for the starting tailback job.
A top in-state recruit, Huggins ran for 146 yards last season with an unsightly 2.6 yards per carry. Healthy and excited about his prospects to be a key contributor under first-year coach Kyle Flood, Huggins has an uphill battle when it comes to winning the starting job as Jawan Jamison ran for 896 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2011. Still, a healthy Huggins can only be a real good thing for the Scarlet Knights. Wed, Mar 28, 2012 10:36:00 AM

Rutgers running back Savon Huggins will miss the remaining regular season games with a knee injury.

Huggins could return for a bowl game, which Rutgers became eligible for with its win over USF on Saturday night. He suffered the injury early in the game. Like Rutgers’ running game on the whole, it’s been a tough season for the freshman. Huggins, rated the nation’s No. 5 recruit by at least one analyst, is just 56-146 for a paltry 2.6 ypc. He has scored 5 TDs.

With the departure of De’Antwan Johnson, freshman Savon Huggins is likely to become Rutgers’ featured tailback.

A thin backfield became thinner with Johnson quitting the team. Maybe Huggins can develop into the top-rated running back the Scarlet Knights have not had since Ray Rice. Huggins was a decorated recruit who certainly now will get an early chance at this level. After a week off, RU hosts Ohio on Sept. 24.
