Cardinals selected LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu with the No. 69 overall pick.
It's one of the best possible landing spots for Mathieu, who will be playing alongside his college teammate and offseason training partner Patrick Peterson. Mathieu will compete for snaps in the slot, and could make an immediate impact on returns. Peterson is one of the league's top return men, but the presence of Mathieu could allow him to focus on becoming a true shutdown corner. Mathieu (5-8, 186) made only 14 college starts, but created 14 turnovers. Despite his well-documented baggage, Mathieu's 2011 tape is dazzling. We like his chances of eventually developing into a versatile, high-impact NFL defender. Fri, Apr 26, 2013 09:00:00 PM

Updating a previous item, the Seahawks and Texans were the two team visits former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu missed due to an illness.

The first report stated one team understood and did not dock Mathieu for the issue, but another possibly did. Obviously the Honey Badger is one of the top stories headed into the second day of the draft, and we believe he will be a second or third round selection.

The Jaguars have removed 10 to 12 prospects off their draft board because of their character issues.

This comes as no surprise considering new general manager David Caldwell comes from the Atlanta Falcons, who are very strict when it comes to evaluating character questions. The team needs to add leaders, which makes sense as to why they removed players. It's anyone's guess as to why they are, however.

Former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu missed two team visits due to an illness.

Jay Glazer added that some teams understood and others didn't. Obviously every move Mathieu makes is put under a microscope, but he has passed every test during the process. Glazer believes the defensive back will be a second day selection.

Former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu did pass his drug test at the NFL Combine.

This is a step in the right direction for Mathieu and a positive sign for his future. Even if he lasts until the later part of the second day, the defender formerly known as the "Honey Badger" will be one of the prominent story lines of draft weekend.

Draft insider Tony Pauline has been told more prospects than ever have been red-flagged this year.

These red flags consist of injuries, character, and off-the-field issues. There are certainly a large number of important medicals in this class, ranging from Jarvis Jones to D.J. Hayden, to Tank Carradine. The other two checks are less commonly known to the outside community, but Tyrann Mathieu's battle with drugs has been well documented. If an unsuspecting prospect does fall during the draft, one of these factors could be the culprit.

An assistant coach for an NFL team told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu admitted to failing over 10 drug tests in college.

"I quit counting at 10," Mathieu answered. "I really don’t know." The assistant coach went on to add that "if he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help." Teams have dealt with players who have drug issues and Mathieu is no different, but it will be interesting to see where he is selected.

With NFL offensive coordinators suddenly majoring in spread offenses, Mathieu is a player that teams will be very interested in because of his ability to play the slot cornerback role.

LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu is visiting the Bucs on Thursday.

Stephen Holder, who reported the visit, calls Mathieu an "intriguing prospect for many reasons." Obviously Mathieu has a knack for the football, but many will question where he projects to the NFL. The former LSU Tiger was successful as a corner, safety, and even weakside linebacker at times.

NFL.com's Mike Mayock projects LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu to go in the third- to-fourth round.

"I think there was a buzz right after the Combine," Mayock said. " ... He's built three or four months of equity, not two or three or four years of equity where he's been clean and where he's looking teams in the eye saying, 'Believe in me because I'm off all the pot,' and all the rest of that. So I don't think he's going to go in the first two rounds. That's my gut and in talking to teams, it's a third- or fourth-round pick is what I'm hearing."

LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu tweeted that he took part in a punt return session with the Cincinnati Bengals.

"Had a great punt return session with @bengals," Matheiu tweeted. He could be an option for the Bengals as a slot cornerback. Mathieu has his questions, particularly off-the-field, but he has quick feet and is a playmaker. There's a chance the Bengals draft him as a replacement for Adam Jones in the future.

LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu says he's past the issues that got him kicked out of school and is completely focused on playing football.

"All the things I put before football in the past, it’s not fun anymore — marijuana and everything you put before football is obsolete now," Mathieu said. He was asked by teams what got him kicked out of school and he responded with marijuana. "It’s smoking marijuana and then it’s all the things you kind of surround yourself around," he added. "The marijuana was the issue but it was the social things, too, that I had to get in line."

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer questioned former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu's effort which resulted in only four bench press reps at the NFL Combine.

"It does concern me," said Zimmer on NFL AM, "because if he was working, obviously — I can bench four times, probably." It is definitely a low number for the defensive back, but Mathieu's talent shines when attacking the football. We expect a late second or early third day selection.

SI.com's Peter King writes LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu was drug tested on Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

King notes that Mathieu was awakened at 4 a.m. to take the test. He was one of all combine participants to be tested. Mathieu was kicked off the LSU football team for failing drug tests. He was arrested in October for a drug-related incident. At the combine, he shined in multiple positional drills, showing good flexibility and ball skills.

Former LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu recorded unofficial forty times of 4.43 and 4.50 seconds at the NFL Combine.

Mathieu's best 10 yard split clocked in at 1.51 seconds. Many questioned Mathieu's athleticism prior to the event, questioning if he could stay at corner or stick with receivers due to speed. This certainly doesn't hurt his evaluation, and Mathieu could be a late second day pick.
