Nebraska junior QB Taylor Martinez threw five touchdown passes while completing 26-of-34 passes for 354 yards in the Cornhuskers' win over Southern Miss.
Martinez has never been known as an accurate, efficient quarterback, but he certainly was against Southern miss. The junior worked with coach Steve Calhoun this offseason, who said Martinez had regressed as a passer since high school. Well something must have changed, because Martinez's motion and footwork looked much improved. We look forward to seeing him progress through the season. Sun, Sep 2, 2012 12:52:00 PM

Nebraska junior QB Taylor Martinez has regressed as a passer during his college career.

Martinez's offseason quarterback coach Steve Calhoun says "he kind of progressively got worse, from when I saw him in high school (to) when he was at Nebraska." The Husker finished 89th in the nation in completions per game last season, and his completion percentage dropped from 59.2 percent in 2010 to 56.3 percent last year. He has a strong arm and good speed, but Calhoun said Martinez needs to improve his footwork if he is to get better as a passer. We doubt he will be looked at as a quarterback prospect by NFL evaluators.

Much-criticized Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez accounted for 3 TDs in a record-setting comeback against Ohio State.

Martinez, who had an awful second half against Wisconsin and did not look much better in the opening half Saturday, led the Cornhuskers in a record-setting comeback. Nebraska set a school record by overcoming a 21-point deficit thanks in large part to the sophomore, who threw a pair of TD passes and ran for a score in a second half that saw the ‘Huskers score 28 unanswered points. Martinez had 191 yards passing on 16-of-22 and he ran for 102.

No lack of criticism directed toward quarterback Taylor Martinez as the Cornhuskers prepared for Ohio State.

Struggling quarterbacks always hear it the loudest. When a signal caller throws three interceptions that lead directly to as many TDs for the opponent during a prime-time showdown then, well, it can become overwhelming. Such has been the circus around Martinez and his teammates this week.
