Senior Gary Nova has been named Rutgers starting QB.
Nova has seemingly been a part of the Scarlet Knights' program for seven years, and we would not call it a successful partnership. In that time, Nova has posted 51 passing touchdowns to go along with 39 interceptions and a career completion of less than 57 percent. Nova was benched for around 10 games last season due to turnovers, and this offseason redshirt junior Mike Bimonte and redshirt freshman Chris Laviano were challenging for the starting job. Incoming Rutgers offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen said he worked this spring to clean up a mechanical issue in senior QB Gary Nova' throwing motion.

"I’ve made one correction with his mechanics," Friedgen said. "He threw the ball on his toes, which puts a lot of pressure on your arm and can lead to arm problems. I was always taught, especially when I was in the NFL, to put your heel in the ground and push off like you’re a pitcher and then get your waist and hips right. It seems to have helped him." This is an important fix, as the former Maryland boss figures to throw more than his predecessors. "My philosophy is to have a balance between run and pass," Friedgen said. "If you’re only one dimensional then they’re going to make you play left-handed and I don’t like to play left-handed. I like to take what the defense gives us."

Rutgers junior QB Gary Nova will remain the starting quarterback on Saturday against Temple.

Head coach Kyle Flood reportedly didn't make up his mind until Thursday afternoon. Flood reviewed game tape and decided to stick with Nova, though he's mentioned the possibility of using multiple quarterbacks under center against the Owls. Under that arrangement, senior backup Chas Dodd would take snaps. Nova has thrown for 1,511 yards with a 56.5 completion percentage and a 14/11 TD/INT ratio in 2013.

Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said he was "very optimistic" that junior QB Gary Nova will play versus Arkansas on Saturday.

Nova sustained a concussion in Saturday's victory over East Michigan. Nova increased his workload in Wednesday's practice, leading to optimism amongst the coaching staff. "(Nova and senior Chas Dodd are) both getting reps like they would in a game week," Flood said. "In these guys' situations, I just don't know if you ever know for sure until game day ... I'm very optimistic (about Nova), I guess is what I can say."

Rutgers junior QB Gary Nova left Saturday's game against East Michigan with an injury.

Rutgers sophomore QB Gary nova left Saturday's game against Pittsburgh in the first quarter with a head injury.

Nova has thrown 10 of his 12 interceptions in the last four weeks, but the sophomore has done a fair job leading the Rutgers' offense this season. Chas Dodd took over at quarterback.

Kent State head coach Darrell Hazell stated the key to stopping the Rutgers offense was forcing sophomore QB Gary Nova to rush his throws under pressure.

Kent State went against their usual tendencies and frequently blitzed Nova, resulting in six interceptions. Hazell also noted that the Rutgers' passing offense relies on their big receivers to win battles on crossing routes over the middle, so the Golden Flashes sat on those patterns. This is an interesting blueprint to stop Nova in the future, so now hopefully he can expand from it.

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood announced that sophomore Gary Nova will start the season opener for the Scarlet Knights.

Nova beat out junior Chas Dodd for the starting job and the team opens against Tulane. "We are fortunate to have two talented quarterbacks who have won big games for us. This has been an excellent competition, but Gary’s body of work ultimately earned him the job," Flood said. Nova finished last season with 1,553 passing yards, including nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova has had a few bright moments and few he would rather forget this season.

The New Jersey high school sensation has had a roller-coaster of a freshman season that saw him take over the starter’s job from Chas Dodd, but not nail it down. Coach Greg Schiano has not named a starter for the Dec. 30 Pinstripe Bowl against Iowa State, but Nova has found the additional practice time prior to the bowl to be valuable.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano did not give any indication that he would make a change against USF this week regarding freshman Gary Nova as the Scarlet Knights’ No. 1 QB.

Nova has turned the ball over nine times in the last three games. On Saturday against West Virginia, the Scarlet Knights led 31-21 at the half in snowy NJ. But the Mountaineers went on to a 41-31 win thanks in part to Nova committing three of his four turnovers over the final 30 minutes. Nova, who took over earlier this season for Chas Dodd, is 2-2 as the starter, has completed 51.1 percent of his passes for 1,125 yards and 9/7.

Freshman QB Gary Nova will make his second career start for Rutgers on Saturday.

Head Coach Greg Schiano, who has been known to have a quick trigger replacing QBs in the past, announced Nova will get the nod again over sophomore Chas Dodd. Nova made his first career start last week against Pittsburgh, leading the team to a 34-10 victory. Nova threw for 174 yards and two TDs against the Panthers, and looks to keep his solid play up against Navy this Saturday.
