Kent State head coach Darrell Hazell stated the key to stopping the Rutgers offense was forcing sophomore QB Gary Nova to rush his throws under pressure.

Kent State went against their usual tendencies and frequently blitzed Nova, resulting in six interceptions. Hazell also noted that the Rutgers' passing offense relies on their big receivers to win battles on crossing routes over the middle, so the Golden Flashes sat on those patterns. This is an interesting blueprint to stop Nova in the future, so now hopefully he can expand from it.

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood announced that sophomore Gary Nova will start the season opener for the Scarlet Knights.

Nova beat out junior Chas Dodd for the starting job and the team opens against Tulane. "We are fortunate to have two talented quarterbacks who have won big games for us. This has been an excellent competition, but Gary’s body of work ultimately earned him the job," Flood said. Nova finished last season with 1,553 passing yards, including nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova has had a few bright moments and few he would rather forget this season.

The New Jersey high school sensation has had a roller-coaster of a freshman season that saw him take over the starter’s job from Chas Dodd, but not nail it down. Coach Greg Schiano has not named a starter for the Dec. 30 Pinstripe Bowl against Iowa State, but Nova has found the additional practice time prior to the bowl to be valuable.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano did not give any indication that he would make a change against USF this week regarding freshman Gary Nova as the Scarlet Knights’ No. 1 QB.

Nova has turned the ball over nine times in the last three games. On Saturday against West Virginia, the Scarlet Knights led 31-21 at the half in snowy NJ. But the Mountaineers went on to a 41-31 win thanks in part to Nova committing three of his four turnovers over the final 30 minutes. Nova, who took over earlier this season for Chas Dodd, is 2-2 as the starter, has completed 51.1 percent of his passes for 1,125 yards and 9/7.

Freshman QB Gary Nova will make his second career start for Rutgers on Saturday.

Head Coach Greg Schiano, who has been known to have a quick trigger replacing QBs in the past, announced Nova will get the nod again over sophomore Chas Dodd. Nova made his first career start last week against Pittsburgh, leading the team to a 34-10 victory. Nova threw for 174 yards and two TDs against the Panthers, and looks to keep his solid play up against Navy this Saturday.
