Lions signed Western Michigan QB Alex Carder.
Carder (6-2, 216) showed some athleticism with a 4.92 forty, 33-inch vertical, and 9-foot-5 broad jump at Western Michigan's March 12 Pro Day. Not an NFL-caliber pocket passer, Carder completed only 58.5 percent of his senior-year throws with a 6.66 YPA and 13:10 TD-to-INT ratio. He also missed six games with a fractured right (throwing) hand. He'll try to beat out Kellen Moore for No. 3 duties in Detroit. Sat, Apr 27, 2013 10:17:00 PM

Western Michigan senior QB Alex Carder will participate in the East-West Shrine Game.

Carder missed the majority of his senior season with a broken throwing hand. In fact, a pin had to be inserted during surgery, but Carder did play in the final two games of the season. He is a fringe draftable talent, so this week could be big for the Broncos' evaluation.

Western Michigan senior QB Alex Carder is aiming to return for the Broncos game against Central Michigan on November 3.

Carder had a pin inserted, and subsequently removed, in his broken throwing hand, but a fairly lengthy recovery process is required. Carder is a favorite non-BCS quarterback of some, but he'll have to show NFL caliber arm talent and skills in a post season all star game, possibly even the East-West Shrine.

Western Michigan senior QB Alex Carder will have the pin removed from his throwing hand on Monday.

The starter injured his hand by hitting it on a UConn player's helmet late in the third quarter of their game. No timetable has been set for his return, but things are certainly more complicated since the injury is to his throwing hand.

Western Michigan senior QB Alex Carder remains questionable for Saturday's game against Toledo with a right hand injury.

The senior injured his throwing hand late in the third quarter of last week's game after hitting it on the helmet of a defender. Carder is scheduled to meet with a doctor on Tuesday, so the team will have more information at that time. A longtime starter for the Broncos, Carder is a potential very late-round to free agent target.
