Vikings signed SMU RB Zach Line.
Line (6-2, 232) earned 2012 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honors as a senior and was a versatile workhorse in June Jones' spread offense throughout his career, rushing 778 times for 4,185 yards (5.38 YPC) and 47 touchdowns. He caught 75 passes. Line ran a 4.77 forty with a 9-foot-3 broad jump, so he lacks explosive measurables. A hybrid fullback/tailback, Line may follow a similar career path to Brian Leonard. SMU senior RB/FB Zach Line will attend the East-West Shrine Game.

The most important aspect of Line's week of practice will be if he lines up at fullback or running back, or some combination of the two. He is a large runner that was used in all aspects of the Mustangs offense, so if that versatility shows he should be a third day selection.

SI's Tony Pauline believes that SMU senior RB Zach Line has feature back potential for a power running team.

He adds that Line could also be a fullback in a west coast offense and that the Mustang was considered a potential third-round choice prior to the 2012 season. Pauline cites the senior's terrific vision and football instincts for the projection.

SMU senior RB Zach Line ran for 113 yards on 22 carries, to go along with two touchdowns, Thursday against Houston.

Line is now averaging 4.8 yards on the season and has scored five touchdowns. The fullback-esque prospect may need to make some kind of a position switch in the NFL, but he has enough talent to certainly get a look.

SMU senior RB Zach Line rushed for 177 yards on 28 carries Saturday against Tulane.

Line also added 27 receiving yards on three catches. The big back may be a converted fullback at the next level, but his experience in pass protection is something evaluators will love.

SMU senior RB Zach Line rushed for 104 yards on 6.5 yards per carry in Saturday's blowout loss to Texas A&M.

Line may project as a fullback at the next level because of his frame and lack of top end speed, but there is no doubting that he makes the most out of his carries. He looks fully recovered from a toe and foot injury that cost him the final three games of the 2011 season.

A source told the Dallas Morning News that a torn toe tendon will sideline SMU running back Zach Line for the remainder of this season.

Just what coach June Jones needs is the loss of the nation’s sixth-leading rusher with No. 11 and undefeated Houston on tap Saturday. While the Cougars would be a heavy favorite regardless of Line's status, any chance SMU has against Case Keenum and Houston is dependent on its ability to play keep-away with a strong running game. Without Line, Jones will rely on a cast of inexperienced backs. Line finishes his season with 1,224 yards (122 per game) and 17 touchdowns.

SMU running back Zach Line was held out of Tuesday’s practice with a toe injury and his status for undefeated Houston on Saturday is uncertain.

The only way the Ponies might be able to hang in against Houston would be to have a healthy Line. After all, a strong running game that chews up some clock would keep the ball out of Case Keenum’s hands. Line hurt his toe against Navy, but continued to play and finished with 24-135-0 in a 24-17 loss. It was the junior’s fourth straight 100-yard outing and his eighth of the season. Line has rushed for 1,224 yards, 17 TDs and is averaging 5.9 ypc. He is sixth nationally with 122 yards per game.
