Colorado's Nick Hirschman will miss spring practice after breaking the same bone in his left foot that he broke last August.

Hirschman was going to be the only Buffaloes’ QB with any experience when spring practice sessions begin Saturday. Scrap that. Though coach Jon Embree says the competition for the top job will be delayed until August when Hirschman returns, Connor Wood, a Texas transfer, should put himself in a nice spot with a productive spring. As a redshirt freshman last season, Hirschman threw 35 passes (192 yards) while backing up the departed Tyler Hansen.

Entering his third season with the program, Nick Hirschman is the only returning quarterback with playiing experience. He feels that gives him an "incredible" advantage.

Hirschman is a third-year sophomore who took the field for the first time in 2011, including one start. A left foot injury that bothered him last season may delay his arrival at spring practice. Despite thinking he has quite an advantage with his service time, coach Jon Embree views Hirschman and another third-year sophomore, Connor Wood, as battling for the No. 1 job when spring drills commence March 10.

With Tyler Hansen injured, redshirt freshman QB Nick Hirschman could get his first start Saturday at Arizona State.

Hansen, who suffered a concussion against Oregon, is yet another player that could be sidelined against the Sun Devils. Hirschman has appeared in relief each of the past three weeks, but he saw extended action against the Ducks after Hansen exited. The 6-3, 230-pouder was 8-of-18 for 71 yards.
