Penn State senior WR transfer Devon Smith was cleared to practice with Marshall and is eligible to play this year.
Smith left the Nittany Lions in late June, prior to the NCAA punishments being issued, for unspecified reasons. However, the senior was charged with marijuana possession in March, so that could have been a factor. Regardless, Smith was the Nittany Lions second leading receiver in 2011 with 25 receptions for 402 yards, so he and Aaron Dobson could make quite a tandem for the Thundering Herd. Devon Smith’s departure for unspecified reasons leaves big void at receiver.

Smith was the second-leading returning receiver in both receptions (25) and yardage (402). Justin Brown, who was 35-517 last season, is now the only returnee who caught more than a dozen passes last season. New coach Bill O’Brien will look to several unproven players to help plug the gap. It was unknown if Smith’s departure was due to a marijuana possession charge in March. He would have been a senior.

A sprained foot will keep receiver Devon Smith sidelined for the duration of the spring.

Coach Bill O’Brien referred to the sprain as "significant", though it is not a break. Smith was 25-402-2 last season and is the team’s second-leading returning receiver. He will be a senior.

Penn State receiver Devon Smith, at 5-foot-7, has become a big factor with Derek Moye sidelined.

At 5-foot-7, 157 pounds and possessing blazing speed, Smith can easily get lost in the secondary – and lose opposing defenders. He did just that last week when he set career highs with 6-110 against Northwestern. With leading receiver Derek Moye (foot) out for a third straight game, Smith will have another chance at a big performance Saturday against visiting Illinois, though the forecast has plenty of white stuff.
