San Diego State HC Rocky Long indicated that if graduate QB Maxwell Smith is awarded a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, the team would want him back as a player-coach.
Two important notes upfront. First, Smith has not yet had his sixth-year of eligibility approved by the NCAA--Long put the paperwork in last week. Second, even if a sixth year is approved, the 6-foot-5, 235-pounder could still simply choose not to return. He tore his ACL against Nevada late in the season, hence why an extra year of eligibility could be in the works. Long referred to him as a "mature guy who can step in if we lose our starter." Said starter would be sophomore QB Christian Chapman. Mar 8 - 7:38 PM

San Diego State graduate QB Maxwell Smith will delay ACL surgery to try and play in the school's bowl game.

"He says he's going to try to play in the bowl game. He's going to try to rehab and put it in a brace and see if he can play...then he's going to get operated on after the bowl game. That's his plan right now," said Aztec coach Rocky Long. Smith tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in Saturday’s win over Nevada. Backup quarterback Christian Chapman will start Saturday’s game against Air Force.

Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips announced that sophomore Maxwell Smith will start at QB for the Wildcats.

Smith beat out senior Morgan Newton for the job during offseason practices. Compared to Newton's experience, including eight starts in 2011, Smith only has one season and three starts to his name. As a freshman, Smith threw for 819 yards with a 55 percent completion percentage, including four interceptions and four touchdowns. The Wildcats will be much more pocket focused with Smith starting under center, as Newton was at his best when on the move.

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips will turn to freshman Max Smith as the starting quarterback against Ole Miss.

With starter Morgan Newton’s ankle sprain bothering him to the point he may not even be able to serve as a backup, Smith was the logical choice. After Newton exited last week against Mississippi State, Smith was 26-of-33, but for only 174 yards. He had thrown only 19 passes in three previous games. Now, he gets his first-career start for the Wildcats, who are winless in SEC play.
