Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads announced that senior Steele Jantz will start at QB for the Cyclones opener.
Jantz beat out sophomore Jared Barnett, who took over at quarterback once the senior was benched. Barnett held on to the job for the majority of last season thanks to wins over Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Kansas. However, Rhoads believes that Jantz offers "the skill set that I think is ideal for our offense." Neither quarterback is overly accurate, completing just over 50 percent of their passes, and Jantz also three 11 interceptions compared to 10 touchdowns. Tue, Aug 21, 2012 12:28:00 PM

New OC and a trimmed down spring playbook are to the liking of quarterback Steele Jantz.

Jantz appeared to conclude last season as having the upper hand as the starter at Iowa State. He has not been anointed No. 1, however, and will compete with Jared Barnett this spring and into the fall. Top gun or not, Jantz has been getting along with new OC Courtney Messingham and the two appear to be on the same page.

After starting the season as the No. 1 QB, Iowa State’s Steele Jantz is adapting to being the backup.

Jantz and the Cyclones were 3-0 out of the shoot, including an OT victory against Iowa. A sprained foot slowed Jantz, ISU lost four straight and the junior finds himself as a backup. He was replaced by Jared Barnett following a poor start against Texas A&M two weeks ago. Behind Barnett, the Cyclones snapped their losing streak last week.
