Ex-Virginia junior QB Michael Rocco will transfer to Richmond and will be eligible to play during the 2013 season.
Rocco will play for his uncle, Danny, who is the Spiders' coach. His transfer was somewhat surprising, as Rocco started some games down the stretch after splitting time with Phillip Sims, but we are guessing the junior was told he would not be given that role heading into the 2013 season. Virginia junior QB Michael Rocco has been given his release from the football program.

This is a surprising development, as Rocco finished the season on a nice streak and started 26 games over the last two seasons. He was splitting time with sophomore Phillip Sims and perhaps coaches already told Rocco Sims would be their starter next season. We guess the junior is looking to transfer to continue his football career.

Virginia junior QB Michael Rocco completed 29-of-37 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns Saturday against Miami.

Rocco, who had been splitting time with sophomore Phillip Sims, completed 17 straight passes in this game. Sims had 14 attempts of his own, but Rocco did well to convert what was given.

Virginia junior QB Michael Rocco will likely have a short leash in Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech.

Head coach Mike London conceded that he will consider a change if it is needed, and backup sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims was rewarded with snaps in last week's loss. After starting last season, Rocco has been average at best causing more turnovers than touchdowns, and Sims is the news guy in town after transferring from Alabama.

Virginia junior Michael Rocco was listed as the Cavaliers' starting QB on Monday's depth chart.

Rocco beat out Alabama sophomore transfer Phillip Sims for the job, who was somewhat surprisingly granted instant eligibility. As last year's starter, Rocco flashed composure from center at times but ultimately ended his season with 2,671 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while helping the team finish 8-5. The Cavaliers open against head coach Mike London's old team, the Richmond Spiders.

With preseason practice underway, a competition between junior Michael Rocco and sophomore Phillip Sims has begun for the starting QB spot.

Rocco, last year's starter, flashed composure form center at times but ultimately ended his season with 2,671 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while helping the team finish 8-5. Sims is a transfer from Alabama and was granted instant eligibility by the NCAA. Head coach Mike London has downplayed the battle, but if Sims produces during the first two weeks of practices, London's decision will be much more difficult.

Coach Mike London is encouraged by the progress of QB Michael Rocco.

London wants the Cavaliers to have a more explosive offense in 2012 and that, in no small part, means airing it out more often than last season. Of course, the QB situation was unsettled in 2011 before Rocco pulled away at the end of the year. He concluded this spring with a very nice effort in the Orange-Blue game and instilled the feeling that he is ready to firmlly take control and make London’s offense work.

It was far from flawless, but Virginia’s Michael Rocco did enough to help lift Virginia past Florida State on Saturday.

Between sacks and pressure, Rocco hit the deck a number of times against the Seminoles. He also completed 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 71 percent. For the fourth time in the last five weeks he did not thrown an interception. That’s a major reason why the Cavaliers will play for the ACC’s Coastal Division title Saturday against Virginia Tech.

Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco threw for a season-high 307 yards and 2 TDs in a 31-13 win at Maryland.

After throwing 1 touchdown pass and 7 INTs in the first four games, Rocco is 7/2 in five games since. The Cavaliers are 4-1 in that span to move to 6-3 (3-2 ACC).
