NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks believes South Carolina senior QB Dylan Thompson's "penchant for giving the ball away is certainly contributing to the team's lackluster play this year."
Thompson threw three interceptions in Saturday's 45-38 loss to Kentucky, which "undermined an extraordinary effort from Mike Davis (23 carries for 183 yards and three scores) that had the Gamecocks positioned to win a key SEC East contest," Brooks wrote. Thompson has not been as effective as advertised in taking over for Connor Shaw. He isn't draftable. Oct 7 - 11:12 PM

ESPN's Kevin Weidl says South Carolina senior QB Dylan Thompson "needs to show he's ready to be the guy for SC."

"Inconsistent tape last year," the analyst tweeted. "Fortunately will have a strong supporting cast." South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier announced in January that Thompson would take over for Connor Shaw. Thompson threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in each of his two starts, both wins, last season while filling in for an injured Shaw. "The loss of Connor Shaw not only in terms of his play but the absence of his grit and leadership can't be overestimated for SC," Weidl added. The Gamecocks face another rough schedule with road games at defending SEC champion Auburn, Florida, and a rematch with Clemson in Death Valley.

South Carolina senior QB Dylan Thompson believes his on-field experience (more than 200 career passes) will help him in his transition to starting duties.

"It's been a blessing to be able to be in some big games, some big moments. What's valuable is road experience," Thompson said. "I've been fortunate to get Clemson on the road, UCF (on the road) last year. The Missouri (road win) was a big teaching point for me." South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier announced way back in January that Thompson would over for Connor Shaw. The Gamecocks have another beastly schedule with road games at defending SEC champion Auburn, Florida, and a rematch with Clemson in Death Valley.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier announced that junior QB Dylan Thompson is the team's new starter.

"[Dylan Thompson] is without question going to be our quarterback unless he gets hurt," Spurrier said on Saturday of Connor Shaw's heir apparent. Thompson is the only remaining QB on the depth chart that has actually seen game action for the Gamecocks. Thompson threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in each of his two starts, both wins, this past season while filling in for an injured Shaw.

South Carolina junior QB Dylan Thompson will start in place of injured senior QB Connor Shaw for Saturday's game against Missouri.

"(Shaw) may be able to dress and get back up, we don't know," head coach Steve Spurrier said. "But Dylan is definitely going to start the game, and it'll be his game to go with." Thompson has flashed passing skill in his limited number of starts during his career, but this could positively impact running back Mike Davis. Davis has been forced to take many handoffs from shotgun sets, but his style could thrive from an I-formation.

South Carolina junior Dylan Thompson and Michigan State sophomore Connor Cook are working with QB guru George Whitfield this summer.

Neither passer is expected to start the season as the No. 1 quarterback on their respective teams. Thompson will work behind Connor Shaw but could see a large number of snaps in certain packages and possibly due to injuries. Cook is in the running for the starting job, but not the favorite.

South Carolina sophomore QB Dylan Thompson will start for the Gamecocks Saturday for the injured Connor Shaw.

Thompson spelled Shaw last week while the senior was held out due to injury. The latter can spread the field much more because of his ability to run, and Thompson failed to complete a pass last week and actually had a total of negative four yards. The Gamecocks play ECU Saturday.

Freshman quarterback Dylan Thompson will work with the first team until Conner Shaw (concussion) is cleared.

Steve Spurrier has had to work his depth chart at QB. Stephen Garcia was the No. 1 before off-field issues led to his dismissal from the program last month. Conner Shaw took over and now he is questionable for Saturday’s game against Florida with a concussion. That leaves Thompson to work with the first unit until Shaw is ready, which won’t be until Wednesday at the earliest. Thompson has taken the field in three games this season with both his pass attempts coming against Kentucky on Oct. 8.
