Kansas senior WR Nick Harwell is one productive year away from attracting NFL attention as a draft pick, according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.
Harwell transferred to Lawrence from Miami (OH) prior to last season after he was dismissed due to off-field issues. NCAA rules forced him to take a redshirt in 2013, coming off 229 catches in three seasons with the Redhawks. "He has ordinary size and speed and doesn't have the most natural hands, but works well out of the slot, using the middle of the field with a veteran field sense," Brugler wrote. "Harwell displays quickness in his breaks and smooth redirection skills, creating a cushion in coverage with his short-area route quickness. While the measureables aren't ideal for the NFL level, he is proven and if he can be productive in Kansas' suspect passing attack, Harwell will attract attention as a possible NFL Draft pick." Former Miami (OH) senior WR Nick Harwell has been ruled ineligible for the 2013 season and will have to redshirt before playing for Kansas.

Harwell was never able to complete the final six hours required to earn his diploma, so instead of transferring as a graduate he will be forced to sit out the season. "They’ll work on everything football related, get their academics in order, work on community service," head coach Charlie Weis said. "There’s a bunch of things they can do to make themselves better prepared and better people and proud Jayhawks."

Former Miami (OH) WR Nick Harwell is headed to Kansas "no matter what."

Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis announced in May that Harwell would transfer to the program, but news since has been unexpectedly nonexistent. Harwell will have to graduate from Miami (OH) first, reportedly needing to pass two or three more classes, but a suspension following theft charges has slowed that goal. "He’s not going back to Miami under any circumstances," Harwell’s attorney, Don Jackson, said. "He’ll be at the University of Kansas whether that means he’s playing this year or sitting this year and playing next year. But we’re optimistic and hopeful that he’ll be playing this year."

Former Miami (OH) WR Nick Harwell will transfer to Kansas.

Harwell was suspended from the team after being arrested, and he was not expected back this season. The fourth year senior was the school's best wide receiver, however, there were times where his hands were very inconsistent. Head coach Charlie Weis was optimistic that Harwell would be eligible for the 2013 season.

Miami (OH) beat writer Rick Cassano does not believe senior WR Nick Harwell will suit up for the 2013 season.

Harwell has been suspended from the team since getting arrested about a month ago. "At this time, there’s been no change in his status," head coach Don Treadwell said. "Once things are completed through the university process and any other process that he’s currently working through, then we’ll be able to resolve a little bit more even what our options are."
