Patriots selected Wisconsin RB James White with the No. 130 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
White (5-foot-9, 204) was a timeshare back throughout college, first splitting with Montee Ball and later Melvin Gordon III. White finished his career with 4,015 yards and 45 touchdowns on 643 carries (6.24 YPC), adding 73 receptions. Labeled a "terrific pass protector" by NFL Films' Greg Cosell, White is an intelligent, patient runner with adequate speed (4.57) but limited burst (9-foot-6 broad jump). He fumbled just twice in four seasons and at worst should make for a useful third-down back. White has some potential to become a lower-end starter in a zone-blocking scheme. Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen are both in contract years. Sat, May 10, 2014 02:30:00 PM

ESPN Bears' beat writer Jeff Dickerson believes Wisconsin RB James White is a "backfield prospect to keep tabs" on.

Dickerson reported that Chicago recently traveled to Madison to work out White privately. The 5-foot-9, 204-pound White finished his Wisconsin career with 4,015 yards and 45 rushing touchdowns. The Bears don't have much behind Matt Forte and Michael Bush on the RB depth chart. "That help could arrive next month if the Bears select a running back somewhere between the fourth and sixth rounds of the upcoming NFL draft, a reasonable target area given the priority in the early rounds will likely be safety, cornerback, defensive tackle and inside linebacker, in no particular order," wrote Dickerson.

Wisconsin running backs coach Thomas Hammock believes RB James White is the type of complete back that the NFL covets.

Hammock said that White can help in "all facets of the game — running, catching, blocking." The 5-foot-9, 206-pound White hasn't run the 40-yard dash since high school, and his time at the combine will probably go a long way towards deciding where he goes in the draft. "James is more of a make-you-miss type of back," Hammock said. "Montee [Ball] was more power, physical, downhill because he's a little bit bigger. But James can help you in the passing game as well. He can catch it. He can run routes. He has a good understanding of football. Very, very smart football player. I think his skill-set will transition well to the next level."

Wisconsin senior RB James White will attend the East-West Shrine Game.

White is the veteran presence in the Badgers' backfield, and even if he does not have the upside of Melvin Gordon III, the senior does offer some intriguing ability. White has also seen the majority of Wisconsin's pass protection and receiving snaps among the school's running backs.

Wisconsin senior RB James White has been invited to the East-West Shrine game.

White, who outrushed more heralded teammate Melvin Gordon III for the fourth consecutive game in Saturday's victory over Minnesota, has accumulated a career-high 1,305 yards on the ground this season. He's also tacked on 13 touchdowns during Wisconsin's 9-2 start. We expect White to be selected during the draft's third day.

Wisconsin senior RB James White rushed for 205 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries in the school's 51-3 over Indiana.

White opened the game with a 91 yard touchdown. He isn't known for his big play ability, unlike teammate Melvin Gordon, but White displayed some nice long speed to sustain the distance he created from vision when hitting the hole. We expect White to be selected during the draft's third day.

Wisconsin senior RB James White rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in a 27-17 win over BYU.

White usually takes a backseat to dynamic teammate Melvin Gordon III, but not tonight. Gordon rushed for 86 yards on 19 attempts. White, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in six of nine games this season, will likely be a third-day selection in May.

Wisconsin senior RB James White rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in a 28-9 win over Iowa.

White eclipsed the 40 touchdown mark in this contest. His skills do not match teammate Melvin Gordon III, but White was more effective in this contest. He will likely draw a third day pick in May.

Wisconsin senior RB James White rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in a 41-10 win over Purdue.

White ripped off an awesome touchdown run which showcased tackle-breaking ability and long speed. He isn't at teammate Melvin Gordon's level, but White will likely earn a third day draft pick in May.

Wisconsin senior RB James White rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries against UMass.

The Badgers were able to run at will, creating wide lanes which allowed running backs to make defenders miss at the second level. In fact, the school had three 100 yard rushers during this game. White added one catch for 11 yards.

Wisconsin senior RB James White is expected to start in the season opener against UMass.

This would be White's first career start at running back after working behind Montee Ball and Charles Clay. White does have two starts to his name, both occurring last season, but those involved the runner lining up in the slot. His 2,571 career rushing yards rank second in the FBS among active running backs. We expect Melvin Gordon to see plenty of touches.

Wisconsin senior RB James White and sophomore RB Melvin Gordon could share the field at the same time.

"A lot of it is going to depend on how those four tight ends come around that allow Melvin and James to possibly be on the field at the same time, which quarterback's playing, how well the quarterback can hurt you with his legs," head coach Gary Andersen said. "Those two packaged together, whether they're on the field at the same time or separately, cause a lot of problems."

Wisconsin junior RB James White gashed the Minnesota defense Saturday for 175 yards on 15 carries, including three touchdowns.

This was only the third game of the season that White was given 10 or more touches, and he responded with an 11.7 yards per carry average. The Badgers offensive line really got a lot of push and parted the seas for their backs today, the second straight week that has happened.

James White has gone from 1,000-yard freshman running back to second-fiddle at his position, but he’s fine with his role.

Though Montee Ball is enjoying a record-breaking season in Madison, White has hardly been a bystander. While he won’t approach the 1,052 yards rushing he had during an exceptional freshman campaign of 2010 – a season that resulted in his being on the cover of at least one major preseason publication -- White has been very productive. He has 524 yards rushing (5.1 ypc) and 6 touchdowns, is 14-149 receiving and 14-300 (21.4) on kick returns.
