Joe Montana's son, Nick, has been named Tulane's starting QB.
Montana spent last season at the JUCO level after he was granted his release from Washington. Head coach Curtis Johnson said Montana had a chance of winning the job all along, and he must have outperformed the other contenders. His pocket awareness has reportedly improved drastically. He passed for 147 yards and one touchdown in four games at Washington. Wed, Aug 28, 2013 09:08:00 AM

Tulane junior Nick Montana will likely win the starting QB job for the Green Wave.

"If (Devin) Powell outplays Montana in the preseason, he might win the job, but it's hard to imagine him actually accomplishing that goal," Rivals' Guerry Smith writes. "Montana has more experience, having started a full season in junior college after losing a tight battle for the starting job at Washington as a freshman, and certainly more pocket awareness." Powell, on the other hand, was sacked nine times in just over six quarters of play.

Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix said the QB class is better than everybody thinks it is.

"Five or six of those guys -- maybe seven -- do a lot of things good and do them good enough to win. This is not a standard answer. I've said this from the start, that two or three of these guys will be franchise quarterbacks. I believe that," Nix said. "The jury's out on this group, but they do enough good things that if you do what they do best you can win with them."

Former Washington QB Nick Montana has a chance to start for Tulane.

Montana spent last season at the JUCO level after his released was granted from Washington. "There’s never been a promise of early playing time," coach Curits Johnson said. "The only promise that I ever give is that if guys don’t do the same things that they did on film, or that they should've done, I promise them that I’ll sit them on the bench by me."

Washington granted Nick Montana a release from his scholarship so that he may transfer.

Montana completed his redshirt freshman season throwing for 147 yards and one touchdown in four games, which included one start when Keith Price was bothered by a knee injury. Price emerged as one of the nation's top QBs, preventing Montana from seeing more action.

Washington quarterback Nick Montana will get his first start Saturday at Oregon State.

Keith Price's sprained left knee opened the door for Montana, son of Hall-of-Fame quarterback Joe Montana. The redshirt freshman was 9-of-15 for 73 yards and 1/0 in relief of Price at USC last week. On the season, he is 13-of-20 for 147 yards and 1/1 in four games.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian will not publicly comment on whether QB Nick Montana will make his frist-career start.

It all depends on how Keith Price's sprained knee will allow him to play Saturday against Oregon State. Sarkisian said he will make his decision today, but will not announce it publicly. Montana relieved the injured Price at USC and was 9-of-15 for 73 yards and 1/0. On the season, he is 13-of-20 for 147 yards and 1/1.

Washington is preparing for quarterback Nick Montana to make his first start this Saturday against Oregon State.

Starter Keith Price left during the second half of last week's USC game with a knee injury. "It's a lot more swollen than it has been (in past injuries), so we have to monitor that," said coach Steve Sarkisian. Because of that news, he stated that the redshirt freshman will take the first-string reps in practice and will be ready to go Saturday if Price's swelling does not subside. The son of the Hall of Famer threw his first touchdown pass in relief last week, going 9-for-15 for 73 yards.
