Bengals selected Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert with the No. 21 overall pick.
It's an acknowledgement of disappointment in Jermaine Gresham, who has never lived up to his athletic billing coming out of college and was an absolute dog in the Bengals' playoff loss to Houston. Eifert (6-6, 250) caught 140 passes for 1,840 yards (13.1 YPR) and 11 touchdowns across three seasons for the Irish, demonstrating terrific hands and elite high-pointing ability on contested throws. He was a dangerous intermediate seam-stretcher as a freshman and sophomore before facing more double teams as a junior and learning to win 50:50 balls amid tight coverage. Also a willing blocker, Eifert sewed up a first-round draft slot with a 4.68 forty at the Combine and a 35.5-inch vertical, which both ranked in the top five at his position. He drew pre-draft comparisons to Todd Heap. Unfortunately due to his landing spot, Eifert is unlikely to make much fantasy noise as a rookie. Thu, Apr 25, 2013 10:34:00 PM

Jets beat writer Manish Mehta says the team likes TE Tyler Eifert, but not at pick No. 13.

The Jets appear to be shopping pick No. 13, possibly to the 49ers. With the team's first pick at No. 9, the Jets could go in a variety of different ways, including Tavon Austin or a pass rusher. We wouldn't be surprised if Eifert does end up being a top 15 selection.
Thu, Apr 25, 2013 10:53:00 AM's Ian Rapoport writes that NFL executives believe Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert is a potential trade-up target for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Falcons have been rumored as potential movers in this year's draft, specifically moving up to select a highly-rated player. They will have a need at tight end following the upcoming season, as Tony Gonzalez is likely retiring. Eifert hasn't had any visits with the team or any other.

Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert did not have a single pre-draft visit during the process.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network notes Eifert is almost a "secretive prospect" and is so under-the-radar. Teams know about Eifert's talent and how clean he is off the field, so after meeting with him at the Combine there is little reason to spend one of the team's 30 visits on Eifert. There's a legitimate chance the tight end is selected in the top 15.

NFL Network's Charley Casserly would not select Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert in the top-15.

Casserly does consider Eifert as this class' top tight end, but has his worries. "I don't see the blocking ability or the true speed," he said. "He's more of a build-up speed guy. I like him in the second-half, the later part of the first round, not the top part of the first round. Solid player."

The Sideline View's Lance Zierlein does not expect a TE to be selected in the top 15 picks.

"Eifert is pretty good, but certainly not special - at all," Zierlein tweeted. Some have pegged the Irish tight end as the top skill position player in this draft and have given him a top 20 grade. We think he goes off the board in the first-round, but the large group of tight ends will like be drafted during the second day.

National Football Post's Russ Lande writes that Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert could go in the top 20 picks following a strong pro day.

"Running outstanding routes, Eifert’s athleticism was readily apparent as an NFL source told us he "ran like he was floating in air,'" Lande writes. "Put through a grueling workout, Eifert did not wear down and showed better strength than he gets credit for in the bag drills. While he will never be a dominant POA blocker, he showed during the workout that he can be a solid positional/backside blocker. After his performance, our sources at the workout said they would be shocked if he is not drafted in the top twenty picks." Eifert has been rumored as a possible selection for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock believes Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert will be a first-round pick.

I think he is the number one tight end in the draft," Mayock said. "What he is fits up with today's NFL. He's an athletic tight end who is an athletic mismatch for just about any linebacker or safety." Mayock went on to suggest Eifert could be a target at No. 13 to the Bucs, since the team needs a vertical tight end.

In a poll conducted by Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, three of five NFL GMs chose Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert over Stanford's Zach Ertz.

However, "all of them said they'd be happy to end up with Ertz," Cole writes. "'I'll take the second guy, whoever it is,' said an AFC general manager who graded Eifert a little better based on his fluid athleticism. 'I just like that better because I think you can flex him out and get some better mismatches.'" Some draft analysts have pegged Tyler Eifert as the top skill position player in this class.

Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay lists Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert as his top skill position player.

Eifert checks in at No. 16 on McShay's big board, one spot ahead of Tavon Austin. Two receivers find themselves in the top 25, with Keenan Allen and Cordarrelle Patterson sitting at No. 23 and 24, respectively. CBS Sports' Dane Brugler also lists Eifert as his top skill position player.

Thu, Mar 21, 2013 05:54:00 PM's Daniel Jeremiah writes that Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert is an ideal fit for the Atlanta Falcons in the first round.

"The Falcons scored big with Gonzalez's decision to return for another season. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they still chose a tight end with their first-round selection," Jeremiah writes. "There's a chance Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert could be there at No. 30, and he would be an ideal candidate to take over for Gonzalez a year from now."

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler lists Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert as the top skill position player in the 2013 Draft.

"Eifert won't create a lot of separation," Brugler writes. "But he's a better blocker than given credit and one of the best at using his body aggressively to finish contested catches." If NFL teams agree, expect Eifert to be selected in the first-round.

One NFL Scout told Mark Eckel that Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert will "probably go somewhere in the middle of the first round, somewhere in the teens."

"And somebody is going to get a real good player there," the same scout added. Another evaluator said "(Detroit’s Brandon) Pettigrew was pretty good coming out, but this kid is better all-around then he was. This guy is the real deal. He can run. He can catch. He runs good routes. He’s not a great blocker, but he’s getting better at it, and he’ll get even better yet."

Former Indianapolis Colts GM Bill Polian said Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert is similar to Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Dallas Clark.

"He’s along the lines of Dallas Clark, but I think taller. He runs more than good enough and he has very good hands and ball skills. He really goes and gets after the ball," Polian said. "He gets a lot of jump balls, and he’s highly competitive. He’s not the kind of guy that’s going to knock anybody on their rear end blocking. The physical load of being inside attached would be a little difficult for him."

One anonymous NFL Scout questioned if Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert "really likes football."

Speaking with Packers beat writer Bob McGinn, the scout stated, "I don't know how much he really likes football. I think he does it because it's something he's good at. He'd be more happy being a wide receiver. Good catcher. Athletic." Eifert was basically a receiver in 2012, lining up against corners are safeties week after week.
