Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads has still not decided on a starting QB, with sophomore Jared Barnett and senior Steele Jantz battling for the title.
Rhoads cited accuracy and minimizing mistakes as two key factors in the decision. Jantz started last season but was benched during a loss to Texas A&M after throwing 11 interceptions compared to 10 touchdowns. Barnett was not much better after taking over, throwing six interceptions to go along with six touchdowns, which led to his benching in the Cyclones bowl game versus Rutgers. "We'll have three scrimmages at that point where I'll probably make my decision... and it will give those boys ample opportunity to show they deserve to be our starter," said Rhoads. Battling to be the Cyclones’ No. 1 QB, Jared Barnett was 11-of-21 for only 67 yards and a pair of interceptions during the spring game.

Barnett has been competing with Steele Jantz to be ISU’s starter, but a disappointing effort in the spring game did little to help his cause. When last seen in a meaningful game, Barnett was removed early and did not return in a loss to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Iowa State’s Jared Barnett threw for 376 yards and ran for 84 in a 37-31 2OT victory over BCS No. 2 Oklahoma State on Friday night.

Barnett, known more for his running, took over for Steele Jantz as the starter last month. He completed 31-of-58 for 376 yards and 3/2 against the visiting Cowboys. The redshirt freshman also ran for 84 yards giving him three 80-plus yard rushing efforts in his four starts.
