West Virginia sophomore RB Dustin Garrison practiced without hesitation following a torn ACL and sprained MCL, which were injured prior to last season's bowl game.
"He looked like he was cutting pretty good, but it’s the hitting that people need to get over," head coach Dana Holgorsen said. The running back mentioned that he experienced some soreness the following morning and that short steps still did not feel natural. Garrison led the Mountaineers in rushing last season with 742 yards while averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Mon, Aug 6, 2012 10:10:00 AM

Dustin Garrison is working to come back stronger from a devastating knee injury.

The Orange Bowl would have capped a fine freshman season for Garrison. Instead, he blew out his knee (ACL tear, MCL sprain) during practice leading up to the game. It’s the type of injury that could keep a player sidelined for up to a year. Though he has yet to be tested on the field, Garrison is coming along well ahead of schedule. Garrison ran for 742 yards (5.5 ypc) and 6 touchdowns last season.

Dustin Garrison and the Mountaineers’ offense can get it done on the ground and not have to rely on Geno Smith all the time.

While the final numbers were not impressive, West Virginia got back into the game and ultimately defeated Pitt last week in large part to an effective running game. The Mountaineers should continue this approach tomorrow night in Tampa against USF. That should mean an active night for Dustin Garrison. The freshman is the team’s leading rusher with 655 yards, though he has not had as many as 15 carries since Oct. 8 against UConn. Shawne Alston, who had two TDs against Pitt, gives the running game a second dimension.
