Kansas junior QB Jake Heaps is using his transfer redshirt season to get a head start on the starting job in 2013.
Along with Heaps, Dayne Crist transferred to Kansas but has been benched halfway through the season in favor of redshirt freshman Michael Cummings. With the Jawhawks having a putrid season, Heaps has a great shot at claiming the starting spot next year. Wed, Nov 7, 2012 01:14:00 PM

Jake Heaps joins Dayne Crist as quarterbacks that are transferring to Kansas.

A prized recruit at BYU, Heaps lost his starting job to Riley Nelson this season. He asked for and received a release from his scholarship earlier this month. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Heaps will sit out the 2012 season. Heaps threw for 1,452 yards, 9 TDs and 8 INTs in 9 games this season. He started 10 games in 2010, throwing for 2,316 yards and 15/9.

BYU quarterback Jake Heaps has asked for a release from his scholarship and will transfer.

The sophomore began the season as the Cougars' starter, but was pulled in favor of Riley Nelson Sept. 30 against Utah State. Nelson led the team to a come-from-behind win and was named the starter going forward. Heaps completed 57.7 percent of his passes and threw nine touchdowns and 8 interceptions this season after setting seven freshman team passing records last year. The Washington state native said he will begin doing research on where to play next, though speculation has him headed to the Pac-12 at Washington, Washington State, Cal, or possibly USC.
