Miami lists senior Jake Heaps and freshman Brad Kaaya as co-QB starters.
Heaps is the expected starter, so Kaaya's name was a bit surprising. Heaps transferred in from Kansas and was expected to be in a competition with Kevin Olsen, but the latter will be suspended for the first contest and was not listed on the depth chart. Miami opens against Louisville. Aug 15 - 9:41 AM

Miami senior QB Jake Heaps sees similarities between the Hurricanes' offense and schemes he's run for BYU and Kansas in the past.

"The offense at UM is similar to different things I’ve done in the past," Heaps said. "[It’s similar to] the offense I ran at BYU my first year and in some ways the offense I came to run at Kansas, as far as making protection calls and changes at the line." The former high school stud set several freshman passing records at BYU before losing his starting job and bolting for Kansas. Heaps went on to get benched in favor of Montell Cozart last year, setting the stage for his second transfer and a competition with Kevin Olsen for the Hurricanes' QB job. "They’re all great guys, highly motivated," Heaps said of his new teammates. "They have high aspirations for what they think they could be. It just makes me want to give everything I have to make this season a successful one."

Kansas graduate QB Jake Heaps is transferring to Miami.

Heaps will be eligible to play immediately, since he just wrapped up his degree with the Jayhawks. This is good news, since the Hurricanes lost starter Ryan Williams this spring due to a torn ACL. Heaps will compete with Kevin Olden, Greg's younger brother, for the starting gig. Heaps started nine games for Kansas after transferring from BYU.

Kansas senior QB Jake Heaps will transfer once he earns his degree later this month.

The former All-World prep prospect set several freshman passing records at BYU and appeared poised for an NFL future only a few years ago. Heaps went on to lose his starting gig and transfer to Kansas, where he was benched in favor of Montell Cozart last year. Charlie Weis hasn't proven adept at identifying effective high-profile transfers, as former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist also floundered in Lawrence. "I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Weis to play football and earn my college degree," Heaps said. "My wife and I have truly enjoyed being part of the Jayhawk community. We have made lifelong friends through this experience." If Heaps decides to continue his career, he'll be eligible to play immediately wherever he goes as a graduate transfer.

Despite rumors that he is transferring, Kansas senior QB Jake Heaps remains on the team's roster.

ESPN reported in late April that Heaps would bolt campus after learning that Montell Cozart had been named starting QB. Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis, who denied last month that Heaps was leaving, was asked the question again on Wednesday. "I’m not talking about any of those things," Weis said. "That’s not what I’m here for. We’re not here to talk about the personnel of our team." It would be a mild surprise if Heaps sticks around for clipboard duties in the fall. Linebacker Samson Faifili and cornerback Brandon Hollomon, meanwhile, have both decided to transfer. Both were projected backups.

Kansas junior QB Jake Heaps is using his transfer redshirt season to get a head start on the starting job in 2013.

Along with Heaps, Dayne Crist transferred to Kansas but has been benched halfway through the season in favor of redshirt freshman Michael Cummings. With the Jawhawks having a putrid season, Heaps has a great shot at claiming the starting spot next year.

Jake Heaps joins Dayne Crist as quarterbacks that are transferring to Kansas.

A prized recruit at BYU, Heaps lost his starting job to Riley Nelson this season. He asked for and received a release from his scholarship earlier this month. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Heaps will sit out the 2012 season. Heaps threw for 1,452 yards, 9 TDs and 8 INTs in 9 games this season. He started 10 games in 2010, throwing for 2,316 yards and 15/9.

BYU quarterback Jake Heaps has asked for a release from his scholarship and will transfer.

The sophomore began the season as the Cougars' starter, but was pulled in favor of Riley Nelson Sept. 30 against Utah State. Nelson led the team to a come-from-behind win and was named the starter going forward. Heaps completed 57.7 percent of his passes and threw nine touchdowns and 8 interceptions this season after setting seven freshman team passing records last year. The Washington state native said he will begin doing research on where to play next, though speculation has him headed to the Pac-12 at Washington, Washington State, Cal, or possibly USC.
