West Virginia senior RB Shawne Alston returned from injury to rush for 130 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries Friday against Iowa State.
Alston has gone through an injury riddled senior season, but this is a nice performance to end the regular season on. The battering ram runner offers a different skill set than many on the Mountaineers offense, choosing to run through contact rather than around defenders, and Alston picked up plenty of yardage on second and third efforts. West Virginia senior RB is listed as "day-to-day" with a lingering thigh injury for Saturday's game against Kansas State.

This is the fourth week in a row Alston has been listed day-to-day with the same injury. The senior apparently touched the field in two of those weeks, but missed the other two completely. Sophomore Andrew Buie has taken over the lead back role, but Alston offers a short yardage element others don't.

West Virginia senior RB Shawne Alston's status for Saturday's game against Texas Tech is uncertain.

Head coach Dana Holgorsen added that it all depends on how Alston practice this week, much like it did last week prior to the game against Texas. In Alston's absence, sophomore Andrew Buie went on a tear against the Longhorns, rushing for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Alston offers something a bit different, however, and is more of a short yardage runner.

West Virginia senior RB Shawne Alston did not make the trip to Texas due to a lingering thigh injury.

It is a fairly significant loss, but Alston has not played in the two previous games and the Mountaineer offense did not lose a beat. The big, bruising running back offers something unlike other runners on the team and is an asset on short yardage, but West Virginia should do just fine without him.

West Virginia senior RB Shawne Alston was limited during Thursday's practice with a thigh injury.

"He actually practiced a little bit (Tuesday) and he was looking pretty good," fellow running back Dustin Garrison said. "Maybe, possibly, we'll see him out there this week." In two games, Alston rushed for 185 yards on 30 carries to go along with three touchdowns, but he is mainly a short yardage back.

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said senior RB Shawne Alston is expected to play in Saturday's game against Baylor.

Alston missed last week's game with a thigh injury, but has been the Mountaineers leading rusher when healthy. He is a different kind of option for the West Virginia fast paced offense, with his bullish style that pounds defenses between the tackles. Still, with that kind of an offense, Alston is useful as an option to pick up short yardage.

West Virginia running back Shawne Alston made a game-saving play in last Thursday's win against USF.

With the clock winding down and the game on the line against USF, Alston got Stedman Bailey to his feet after the latter’s spectacular catch. It proved no small detail as the Mountaineers ultimately earned an Orange Bowl date with Clemson.
