Cal senior QB Zach Maynard was carted off the practice field Tuesday with an apparent left knee injury.
In fact, a brace was put on the knee to immobilize it. Maynard originally injured the knee against Washington last Saturday but was attempting to practice in the hopes of playing in his final collegiate home game. When asked if Maynard could play this weekend, Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said "I have no idea." Wed, Nov 7, 2012 10:07:00 PM

Cal senior QB Zach Maynard injured his left knee in the Loss to Washington Saturday but no ligament damage was found.

His MRI came back negative, but Maynard was seen on crutches Sunday morning and is considered "day-to-day." This comes one week after Maynard's half brother, junior receiver Keenan Allen, was diagnosed with a PCL injury that will sideline him for another one or two weeks.

Cal senior QB Zach Maynard will not start the opener against Nevada, head coach Jeff Tedford announced.

Tedhord is holding Maynard out of the start after the quarterback missed a tutoring appointment during the summer. The senior is expected to play early in the game, however.

With half-brother Keenan Allen sidelined, Zach Maynard has little in the way of experienced targets this spring. However, his growth as a QB has been noted by coach Jeff Tedford.

Redshirt freshman Maurice Harris is the most experienced receiver this spring – and he has yet to catch a pass. Working with a raw group of receivers gives Maynard a chance to establish himself as an unquestioned leader. He finished the 2011 season pretty strong and needs to carry that momentum through the spring and into fall drills. Tedford has noticed a difference in how the QB is handling the huddle.

Cal coach Jeff Tedford made it clear that Zach Maynard is the No. 1 quarterback heading into spring practice.

Freshman Zach Kline might be the favorite among some of the Golden Bears’ faithful, but Maynard is the incumbent and will be No. 1. He struggled at times, for sure, but finished the 2011 campaign nicely. It was Maynard’s performance in the final few games that has Tedford feeling good about his QB, who will be a senior. For the season, Maynard completed 57 percent of his passes for 2,990 yards and 17 TDs with 12 INts.

While Zach Maynard’s effort against Texas in the Holiday Bowl could give him a 3,000-yard season, the Golden Bears’ QB is not as statistically imposing as some of the Big 12 signal callers the Longhorns have faced.

Maynard, in his first season at Berkley after transferring from Buffalo, is 37th nationally in passing yards (2,802) and 64th in pass efficiency. For the most part, those numbers are far removed from what the quarterbacks the Texas defense faced the last four games of the regular season have compiled: Landry Jones , Brandon Weeden, Seth Doege and Robert Griffin III.
