Jon Budmayr needs hip surgery and will likely miss the 2012 season.

It’s been one unfortunate blow after another the last two years for Budmayr. He missed all of last season with a nerve problem in his right throwing arm, an issue that lingered through this spring. Now, he needs hip surgery. Budmayr would have been in the mix as a backup to Maryland transfer Danny O’Brien. Joel Salve is now the unquestioned No. 2.

Quarterback Jon Budmayr is still searching for a diagnosis to the nerve problem in his right and throwing arm.

On top of the mysterious arm issues that sidelined him last season, Budmayr is also bothered by a hip injury. While he says that patience is the key, you wonder if he will take the field in 2012 as well. The junior was expected to battle for the starter’s job last season. As it turned out, the Badgers ultimately landed Russell Wilson and the hope was Budmayr would be ready to go for 2012. That remains in doubt.

Jon Budmayr has hopes of being Wisconsin's No. 1 quarterback, but he is again experiencing problems in his throwing arm -- problems that could cost him the spring.

Budmayr was progressing nicely less than two months ago, but the timing of this latest setback is most unfortunate. He missed all of 2011 with nerve-related problems in his right (throwing) arm and the hope was that he could rebound and take over the top job. Budmayr will only be a redshirt sophomore, but it is difficult not to wonder if he will take the field again especially given the type of recurring problem he has.

Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr (elbow) has shown rapid recovery one month after suffering a setback.

Many expected Budmayr to be the Badgers’ quarterback coming out of spring drills last year. Russell Wilson transferring to Madison took care of that, but Budmayr’s injury prevented him from taking the field anyway. Budmayr was suffering from a nerve problem in his right elbow that required surgery and was dealt a setback in December that prevented him from throwing. Budmayr, who will be a junior next season, is now finally working out and his recovery is such that he is close to 100 percent. Budmayr was 8-of-10 for 134 yards and a TD in 2010.

Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr's recovery from an nerve problem in his elbow takes a turn for the worst.

What a forgettable season this has been for the sophomore. Budmayr was in line to be Wisconsin’s starting quarterback before Russell Wilson transferred from North Carolina State. Then, during the first week of fall drills, Budmayr was felled by a nerve problem in his right throwing elbow that often left his fingers numb. He missed the whole season and was recently coming around in his recovery before suffering a setback. Reports have surfaced that Budmayr’s uncertain status for the immediate – and perhaps long-term -- future has heightened Wisconsin’s desire to get Dayne Crist to Madison. The former Notre Dame QB was considering transferring to Wisconsin, but then Kansas hired former Irish coach Charlie Weis to take over for fired Turner Gill. Weis recruited Crist at Notre Dame and has met with him about coming to Lawrence.
