Marshall senior QB Rakeem Cato reminds CBS Sports' Dane Brugler of "a smaller, not as refined version of Teddy Bridgewater."
"He has fierce competitive heart and has clearly matured since he arrived at Marshall, but the lack of size, inconsistent mechanics and overconfident arm hurt his NFL value. Cato reminds me of a smaller, not as refined version of Teddy Bridgewater," Brugler wrote. Marshall's four-year starter had a solid junior season, finishing with 3,916 passing yards and 45 total touchdowns (39 passing, 6 rushing). The 6-foot, 188 pound Cato, has thrown for more than 8,000 yards over the past two years. Jul 16 - 4:26 PM

Marshall junior QB Rakeem Cato completed 28-of-44 passes for 337 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Friday's 31-20 Military Bowl victory over Maryland.

Cato and future NFL TE Gator Hoskins (six receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns) shredded Maryland's porous secondary. NFL.com's Gil Brandt wrote earlier this year that Cato "reminds me a little bit of Russell Wilson." Cato is sub 6-foot and sub 200-pounds, but his arm is strong enough that he could be given an NFL look after next season. Cato, who has thrown for more than 8,000 yards over the past two seasons, will be one of the nation's best non-BCS players in 2014.

Cato is sub 6-foot and sub 200-pounds, but his arm is strong enough that he could be given an NFL look after next season. At 5-1, Marshall is now tied for first place in the Conference USA East Division with East Carolina.

Marshall junior QB Rakeem Cato completed 19-of-35 passes for 235 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Thursday's wild 51-49 loss to Middle Tennessee State.

Cato and the Thundering Herd stormed back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter before Logan Kilgore hit Tavarres Jefferson with a nine-yard touchdown strike as the clock expired. Marshall had a reason to gripe, however: The referees called the game after the touchdown instead of making MTSU attempt an extra point. If Marshall had blocked the kick and returned it the other way, they could have forced overtime.

NFL.com's Gil Brandt wrote that Marshall junior QB Rakeem Cato "reminds me a little bit of Russell Wilson."

"But I don't think he's as good as the Seahawks quarterback," Brandt wrote of the sub 6-foot Cato. "He moves around a lot and has a strong arm. He's a guy right now that would definitely be drafted if he were to come out (he's a true junior). Definitely is a prospect, but it would be smart for him to stay in school with all the quarterbacks coming out this year." Brandt doesn't rank underclassmen this early in the season, but he believes Alabama's A.J. McCarron is the No. 1 senior quarterback, followed by Stephen Morris, Tajh Boyd, Aaron Murray and David Fales.
