Georgia sophomore RB Ken Malcome will transfer to a different program.
Malcome flirted with the idea in 2011, but it looks official this time. "I have made this decision because I think I can get more playing time some place else," Malcome said. He wasn't going to pass the freshman duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall on the depth chart. Wed, Jan 16, 2013 01:47:00 PM

Georgia sophomore Ken Malcome is "not too happy with the situation" at RB.

Georgia heavily favored freshman backs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall this season, so Malcome lost many chances to touch the field. "I don’t have to start," he said. "I don’t mind sharing carries. I just want to contribute to winning like I know I can... they’re putting me in situations where I can’t really help myself." Malcome did not mention a possible transfer, however.

Georgia sophomore RB Ken Malcome will not be handed the starting RB position, despite being the odds on favorite to open the season at that spot.

Malcome is seemingly the only running back left from the 2011 season but with be joined by senior Richard Samuel, who made the switch from fullback, and freshmen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. When asked about the position, junior quarterback Aaron Murray stated, "we have Richard, who’s probably going to get the majority of the [practice] reps, so I know he knows everything." Head coach Mark Richt is known for keeping the hot hand on the field, specifically if it involves a freshman, so Malcome will need to produce early to hold on to the job.

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said preseason practice will be about, "trying to build our identity."

Much of the recent discussion has focused on the running back position after Isaiah Crowell's dismissal, but Bobo points out that the Bulldogs lost three starting offensive linemen, their top two tight ends, and starting fullback. "I do think we’ve got enough guys to go out and be successful offensively," Bobo said. Sophomore running back Ken Malcome is expected to take over as Georgia's lead ball carrier after only rushing for 174 yards last season.

Ken Malcome is listed as Georgia's No. 1 running back going into Monday's Outback Bowl.

The freshman played in only five games for the Bulldogs this season, gaining 123 yards on 30 carries. However, Malcome made the most of his late-season opportunities, jumping from fifth on the depth chart to being named starter. Though Malcome is atop the chart for this game, he has plenty of competition nipping at his heels with backs Isaiah Crowell and Richard Samuel looking to outshine him against Michigan State. Malcome, who almost transferred at the beginning of the season, gained 54 yards on just 6 touches in SEC title game against LSU.
