Former Wisconsin and Maryland senior QB Danny O'Brien will transfer to Catawba College, per his high school coach.
Catawba plays at the Division II level, so O'Brien will be available to play immediately. "He just wants to go and have some fun and play some football," O'Brien former coach, Todd Willert, said. "I think he's excited to play back in North Carolina so it's not so far away from everything. Family and friends and everybody can go watch him in his last year. I think he's looking forward to that." Mon, Jul 22, 2013 08:26:00 AM

Fox Sports' Jesse Temple reports Wisconsin senior Danny O'Brien has left the school.

That means O'Brien only spent on season at Wisconsin after transferring from Maryland. He was expected to claim the starting quarterback spot last season but was benched in a musical chairs-like situation for the Badgers. O'Brien is reportedly back at home in North Carolina.

Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel believes Wisconsin senior Danny O'Brien will keep the Badgers' starting QB job despite being pulled in Saturday's win over Utah State.

Potrykus writes that offensive coordinator Matt Canada‘s "desire to ensure the players aren’t wary of losing their position too quickly suggests Danny O’Brien will retain the No. 1 job for at least another week." O'Brien helped lead the Badgers to a 14-3 deficit in the first half before being replaced by freshman Joel Stave. Bret Bielema had a quick trigger finger when firing his offensive line coach after two games, but it appears he will wait on naming a new quarterback.

Maryland junior transfer Danny O'Brien has officially been named Wisconsin's starting QB by head coach Bret Bielema.

The Badgers open with Northern Iowa. O'Brien made 17 starts at Maryland and passed for 4,086 yards with 29 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Despite completing his undergraduate education at Maryland, O'Brien still has two years of eligibility remaining at Wisconsin. "Both Curt and Joel had great camps as well, we are very fortunate that we have 3 QB's that can play winning football for us," Bielema tweeted, referring to backup quarterbacks Curt Phillips and Joel Stave.

Wisconsin offensive coordinator Matt Canada stated that junior transfer Danny O'Brien is not locked into the starting QB role.

"Danny brings some on-the-field experience... But the other guys were here through the spring and know the system, the players and Wisconsin," Canada said. O'Brien transferred in the offseason from Maryland as a graduate student, therefore he will not have to sit out the 2012 season. We expect O'Brien to be named the starter shortly after Wisconsin opens fall camp, and despite a new offensive coordinator, the Badgers will utilize a similar run first style

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is transferring to Wisconsin.

After visiting Madison and meeting with new OC and quarterbacks coach Matt Canada, O'Brien decided that the Badgers' offense would be the best fit. With coach Bret Bielema dealing with injuries and inexperience at the position, Wisconsin may be the best fit anyway. O'Brien is the second former ACC signal caller to transfer to UW in as many years. Russell Wilson was in the early Heisman conversation after transferring from North Carolina State last year. O'Brien, who like Wilson is a graduate student and will be able to play immediately, was the ACC's freshman of the year in 2010.

Quarterback Danny O’Brien attended the Nittany Lions’ practice on Monday – and was wearing a Penn State jacket.

Monday marked O’Brien’s second visit to Happy Valley and a decision as to where he will play his final two seasons is expected soon. The QB has also visited Wisconsin and Ole Miss. As a graduate student he will not have to sit out one season after transferring. Incumbents Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden have not impressed in their battle to win the job the last two years. While McGloin had the edge in playing time last season, he completed only 54 percent of his passes for 1,571 yards and 8/5. Bolden had a completion percentage of an abysmal 39.3 and 2/7.

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien reached out to Penn State and expressed interest in transferring to Happy Valley.

Danny O’Brien has taken his time in choosing where to resume his career – and Penn State could be the answer with the coaching he could get from Bill O’Brien. Still, Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden are on board and could very much improve under the new coach. Danny O’Brien intended to visit a number of schools during their spring practices. His high school coach said the quarterback will make a decision by mid-April. Wisconsin and Vanderbilt are also high on Danny O’Briens’s list.

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is taking a good look at Wisconsin as a possible transfer destination.

Wouldn’t that be something if the Badgers had a graduate transfer under center two straight years? Given UW’s uncertainty at the position with more than one on the depth chart recovering from health issues that were not minor, O’Brien to Wisconsin has to at least be intriguing. O’Brien previously stated that he is looking at other schools, including Stanford and Michigan State.

Quarterback Danny O'Brien is among three more players that have decided to leave Maryland.

As the number of players that have decided to leave since the end of last season continues to swell, coach Randy Edsall is losing a QB that started 17 games the last two years. Like the Terps, O'Brien had a forgetful 2011. He lost his starting job to C.J. Brown in October and broke his non-throwing arm in November. O'Brien, who says he is on track to graduate in the spring, has two years of eligibility remaining and could play right away for his new school as a graduate transfer. According to somebody close to the QB, Wisconsin and Stanford are in the mix.

Coach Randy Edsall said quarterback Danny O'Brien will be limited during spring practice while recovering from a broken non-throwing arm.

O'Brien, who will be a junior, broke his arm in November against Notre Dame. He lost his starting job to C.J. Brown in October and got it back before the injury cost him the last two games. O'Brien threw for 1,648 yards with 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
