Michigan State junior Andrew Maxwell "working his tail off" to remain the Spartans starting QB.
"I'm sure he's approaching this like this is his job, and that's the way it should be," quarterbacks coach Dave Warner said. "With all the confidence in the world that he's going to get better and then get this team back to where we belong." Maxwell was pulled from the team's bowl game after a poor performance. Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio intends to stick with soon to be senior Andrew Maxwell as the school's starting QB.

"I will say this: Andrew Maxwell is still our No. 1 quarterback," Dantonio said. "I think he understands what to do, he needs to do things better at certain times, but that’s where I stand on that aspect." This is an early endorsement considering Dantonio pulled Maxwell during the team's bowl game. The Spartans passing offense was very poor in 2012, but that could partially be attributed to a young group of receivers.

After a shaky debut that included three first half interceptions, Michigan State junior QB Andrew Maxwell will be the center of attention in the Spartans' upcoming game against Central Michigan.

Maxwell should thank junior running back Le'Veon Bell for drawing all of the attention away from the quarterback position after Bell single-handedly made the offense move. The offseason reports on Maxwell were glowing, but his debut was not. Not only did the junior turn the ball over but he failed to recognize some presnap blitzes. Central Michigan sports a porous defense, so if Maxwell fails to turn his game around it will be cause for concern.

Michigan State junior CB Darqueze Denard said there is "really no drop-off" from former Spartans QB Kirk Cousins to current teammate Andrew Maxwell.

"Kirk was smarter and I guess he had more freelance for play-calling," Dennard said. "But I pretty much think they're neck and neck." Maxwell, a junior, is taking over for the departed Cousins and appears to be handling the starting role very well. The Spartans open against Boise State, and Maxwell needs to generate a solid rapport with a new cast of receivers.

Michigan State junior Andrew Maxwell is set to take over the starting QB role for the departed Kirk Cousins.

Maxwell did miss a significant portion of spring practice due to a sprained right knee but there should be not lingering issues heading into preseason practice. The Spartan has never started a game but has amassed 29 completions for 294 yards and a touchdown on 51 career throws. After losing their two top receivers to the NFL, Michigan State should rely on their sturdy junior running back LeVeon Bell to carry much of the offense.

Andrew Maxwell will not play in Michigan State’s spring game Saturday.

The Spartans' new starting quarterback sprained his right knee during an April 14 scrimmage and coach Mark Dantonio is doing the right thing in shutting down Maxwell. Connor Cook will see most of the work Saturday.

Andrew Maxwell’s sprained right knee may prevent him from playing the Spartans’ spring game on April 28.

Coach Mark Dantonio is going to handle Maxwell with kid gloves. As well he should because the junior is taking over for Kirk Cousins. MSU fans would like to see Maxwell perform in the spring game, but his being 100 percent healthy for the fall is a little more important.

After waiting three years for his chance, Andrew Maxwell is preparing to lead the Spartans.

Maxwell redshirted in 2009 before serving as Kirk Cousins’ backup the last two years. While Cousins set numerous MSU records, Maxwell does not feel any pressure in taking over the reins. Rather, he wants to establish his own identity in taking advantage of the opportunity. Maxwell, who played in four games last season, is 29-of-51 for 294 yards am 1/0 in his career.
