Colorado announced junior Connor Wood as the starting quarterback on Monday.
Wood (6-foot-4, 225-pounds) will lead the Buffs into Sunday's opener against rival Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Mile High Stadium. True freshman Sefo Liufau will function as Wood's backup. Wood transferred from Texas to Colorado in 2011 and started one game in 2012 (he appeared in seven). Colorado is praying for stability at the sport's premier position after an offseason of attrition: Jordan Webb tore his ACL in spring practice and both Nick Hirschman and Shane Dillon transferred post-spring. Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said Wood "throws a nice deep ball and has a little stronger arm than some of the other guys, but some of them are a little more accurate on some of the underneath stuff." Connor Wood has been taking all of the first-team reps this spring.

The Texas transfer has not thrown a pass in college….and neither has any other quarterback participating this spring. Nick Hirschman (35 career attempts) is out after breaking his foot, so Wood has had the opportunity to show what he can do. It is hard to imagine that he will not even have a slight edge over the idle Hirschman heading into fall drills. Coach Jon Embree indicated at the outset of the spring that the competition begins in August. Even so, one would think Wood will be in good shape.

With Nick Hirschman injured and out for the spring, Connor Wood has an opportunity to grab some momentum as Colorado’s No. 1 quarterback.

Of course, coach Jon Embree is saying the right things in that the competition for the starting quarterback job does not begin until fall drills, etc. As far as Connor Wood is concerned, the spring is his time to shine and firmly position himself as a QB that will be ready to take the No. 1 job come fall practice – if not sooner. Wood, a Texas transfer, has not thrown a pass in a college game. That may not mean anything with a strong spring showing.
