Boise State HC Chris Petersen believes only a few throws can change the entire outcome of a game for his senior QB Joe Southwick.
"When you get to this point, it always comes down to consistency, and what I mean by that is it comes down to about two to four throws a game," Petersen told Bruce Feldman. "And that changes everything, whether it's a shot downfield, a critical third down or where the ball is placed on a receiver so that now maybe instead of the receiver should've made the catch, the ball is placed in a different spot so he's going to make the catch. It's really those subtle things that maybe the fans in the stands don't know but all of the coaches see that, yeah, he's taken a step there." May 7 - 12:26 PM

Junior Joe Southwick has been named Boise State's starting QB for the opener against Michigan State.

Southwick beat out sophomore Grant Hedrick, and freshmen Jimmy Laghrea and Nick Patti. The junior's performance in the spring game (14-for-16, 145 yards) gave him a leg up, but he certainly has big shoes to fill, from a statistical stand point, after Kellen Moore graduated. Southwick will face a tough first test in Michigan State during opening weekend.

Boise State head coach Chris Peterson is taking a "wait and see" approach in naming the Broncos' starting QB.

With four-year starter Kellen Moore now in the NFL, the Broncos are left with a four-man race to take his spot under center. Peterson has a lot of depth at the position, opening up a quarterback competition between junior Joe Southwick, sophomore Grant Hedrick, and freshmen Jimmy Laghrea and Nick Patti. Southwick's performance in the spring game (14-for-16, 145 yards) gives him a leg up, but Peterson also praised Hedrick's passing ability and Laughrea's arm strength.

Joe Southwick is among quarterbacks assembled in Boise this spring as the Broncos prepare for life without Kellen Moore.

Southwick has two years in the system, but only 54 career pass attempts. Southwick, who is a similar size (6-1, 197) as Moore, has earned praise from coach Chris Peterson for his hard work and understanding of the system. Still, there is plenty of competition this spring.
