Vanderbilt senior QB Austyn Carta-Samuels (ACL tear) will miss the BBVA Compass Bowl.
Carta-Samuels tore the left knee ligament in a win on Oct. 19 over Georgia and underwent surgery shortly upon the regular season's conclusion on Nov. 30. Carta-Samuels started the last three regular season games -- against Kentucky, Tennessee and Wake Forest -- because, he told the media, he couldn't further damage the knee by playing. "That guy made the ultimate commitment to his team," Vandy coach James Franklin said. Franklin, per team policy, refused to discuss the injury or prognosis until now. Mon, Dec 16, 2013 09:59:00 PM

Carta-Smauels was injured in last weekend's victory over Georgia. Freshman Patton Robinette will take over the helm of the Commodore offense. Vanderbilt senior QB Austyn Carta-Samuels completed 21 of 36 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday's 39-35 loss to Ole Miss.

Carta-Samuels also threw two interceptions, the first of which came in the opening minutes of the game and was converted into an Ole Miss field goal. Carta-Samuels' second interception occurred in the fourth quarter and effectively ended this wild affair. Vanderbilt doesn't possess the talent to withstand critical errors from the quarterback position in SEC play, but it's difficult to pin this loss on Carta-Samuels when the signal-caller directed a few brilliant drives that kept the Commodores in the game.

Junior Austyn Carta-Samuels was listed as the team's starting QB, over senior Jordan Rodgers, on the team's mid-week depth chart.

Rodgers has not had a bad start to the season, completing 30-of-56 attempts for 431 yards including two touchdowns and an interception while adding 43 yards on the ground, but Carta-Samuels started Saturday against Presbyterian and completed 13-of-20 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. The ground game was very effective last week against weaker competition, so we have yet to see what Carta-Samuels is made of.

Wyoming transfer Austyn Carta-Samuels is competing for the starting QB job at Vanderbilt this spring.

Coach James Franklin has built depth at a few positions and one of them is at quarterback. So much so that three of his recruits switched positions. The chief competition for the No. 1 QB job will be between Carta-Samuels and Jordan Rodgers. The latter, brother of NFL star Aaron Rodgers, started the Commodores’ final seven games last season. Carta-Samuels was the 2009 MWC Freshman of the Year and in two seasons at Wyoming he threw for 3,655 yards and 19 touchdowns (13 INTs) while rushing for 758 yards and 6 TDs. After sitting out last season following his transfer, Carta-Samuels has two years of eligibility remaining.
