Virginia Tech and redshirt junior RB Michael Holmes are "permanently separated," Athletic Director Jim Weaver announced.
The decision comes directly from the student judicial board. Holmes' assault charges were reduced in June, which left many thinking the door was still open for a possible return. However, that does not appear to be the case and Holmes will likely finish his career with another program. Tue, Jul 9, 2013 11:29:00 AM

Michael Holmes appears to have a nice lead in replacing David Wilson as the Hokies’ starting running back.

It was no secret prior to the spring that Holmes would be given ample opportunity to step up and at least help fill the considerable vacancy left by Wilson, who opted to declare for the NFL draft early. The sophomore-to-be impressed the coaching staff time and again during drills and scrimmages.

Michael Holmes will get a good look this spring as he competes for playing time at running back.

With David Wilson having departed early, the Hokies are in need of a leading running back. Holmes had an impressive high school career in Virginia before operating on the VTU scout team last season as a redshirt freshman. He caught the attention of the coaching staff while displaying tremendous ability. This spring represents his chance to work his way into serious contention for reps come fall practice, when the decision for a No. 1 running back will likely be made.
