Virginia Tech sophomore RB J.C. Coleman shed his blue practice jersey on Monday and fully participated for the first time in weeks.

"I think he’ll be OK," running backs coach Shane Beamer said. "I think it was just a little tight and sore. But he said he’d be ready to go Thursday... If we had a game today, he would have played." Coleman has been dealing with an ankle injury and should hold the starting job when healthy.

Coleman has now missed three of the first four games of the season. The sophomore has dealt with multiple ankle injuries all offseason, but expect Coleman to return against Georgia Tech on September 26.

Virginia Tech sophomore RB J.C. Coleman did not travel to Atlanta and will not play against Alabama.

Coleman was listed as a co-starter at the position during summer camp, but dealt with multiple ankle issues, a left high-ankle sprain and a right ankle sprain, two weeks ago. He returned to practice earlier this week and declared he would definitely play against the Crimson Tide. Redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds will get the start.

Listed as the team's co-starter, Coleman suffered ankle sprains to both legs during offseason activities. Coleman led the position in rushing last season, totaling 492 yards. He has vowed to play in the contest. Virgina Tech also announced that S Kyshoen Jarrett (hamstring) and WR Charley Meyer (hamstring) are probable to participate in the game.

Despite freshman RB J.C. Coleman producing 183 rushing yards against Duke, Virginia Tech plans on continuing their committee approach at the position.

Head coach Frank Beamer continues to praise junior Tony Gregory and redshirt freshman Michael Holmes, adding that both are still in the mix for playing time. He did hint that the team will ride the hot hand, so whichever one of the three steps up will get the most carries in that game.

Spring enrollee J.C. Coleman has made a nice impression on running backs coach Shane Beamer.

Redshirt freshman Michael Holmes has attracted much attention as a possible successor to David Wilson – attention that is deserved. Coleman is also in the mix and has been earning plenty of praise from Beamer. The coach has not only been impressed with what Coleman can do when he gets his hands on the football, but also what a solid individual the talented RB is.
