Oklahoma State will reportedly start senior Clint Chelf at QB against Iowa State.

J.W. Walsh was dreadful last week against TCU, throwing two interceptions in a quarter of action, and was yanked for Chelf. Head coach Mike Gundy has not handled his quarterback position well this season. Chelf started the opener and was quickly pulled after two series. Gundy then said he didn't expect to use Chelf on the field moving forward. The Cowboys' offense has been uncharacteristically inconsistent this season.

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said "I don't see" senior QB Clint Chelf rotating in at quarterback going forward.

Sophomore QB J.W. Walsh relieved Chelf against Mississippi State and completed 18 of 27 attempts for 135 yards. Walsh was a true terror when he tucked the ball, running for 125 yards and a TD on 13 carries. Chelf threw for 1588 yards with a 60.4% completion percentage, 15/6 TD/INT ratio and 162 rushing yards (no TDs) in 2012. He'll need an injury to Walsh (or extended struggles from him) to see the field again this season.

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy announced that he will use a two-quarterback system to begin the season.

"We're gonna play both guys," Gundy said. "I don't feel like either one of 'em will be a backup in the first game." Senior Clint Chelf and sophomore J.W. Walsh both have starting experience. This will be a difficult fantasy situation for Big 12-only owners to navigate. Chelf threw for 1588 yards with a 60.4% completion percentage, 15/6 TD/INT ratio and 162 rushing yards (no TDs) in 2012. Walsh accumulated 1564 passing yards and 290 rushing yards (7 TDs) last season, posting a superior 66.9% completion percentage and 13/3 TD/INT ratio. Walsh bested Chelf in 2012 QB rating, as well, finishing with 170.1 to the senior's 147.2. "We're excited to give both of them an opportunity to play in the game," Gundy said. "We feel like they each give us something that can (help us)."

"Common sense" would indicate that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy will pick senior Clint Chelf as the school's starting QB, beat writer Kelly Hines writes.

Chelf "has earned the respect of teammates and coaches after last season's improbable ascent from third string to first," where he ended last season. He is currently in a competition with sophomore J.W. Walsh after West Lunt transferred. Both have starting experience and both played a good chunk of minutes last season.

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy announced he is not ready to name a starting QB.

The battle is between senior Clint Chelf and sophomore J.W. Walsh. Many writers connected with the program expect Chelf to be named the starter, which would allow Walsh to hold the spot the next two seasons. Both passers, along with ex-Cowboy Wes Lunt, saw action last season due to injuries and skittish performances.

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy plans on using two quarterbacks in 2013, a stance he had previously been against during his coaching career.

"I've never been a big two-quarterback system coach," Gundy said. "I'm not sure that that works. But we're fortunate they both bring something different to the table. They have great attitudes. The team, our chemistry is good because players like both of them. We plan on playing both guys. How much? I'm not sure. But both of them bring something different to the table." Oklahoma State ended up using three passers last season due to injuries, but Clint Chelf and J.W. Walsh will both see action this year.

Oklahoma State junior Clint Chelf will start at QB for the Cowboys against West Virginia.

Freshman Wes Lunt suffered a head injury recently and was cleared to play, but Chelf took the majority of reps in practice. Apparently, there is hope that regular starter J.W. Walsh will return from a knee injury next week.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken expects Clint Chelf to be ahead of the other QB candidates. If not, then that’s a problem.

Chelf has been in the system for two years and should have a better understanding of the offense than younger players seeking playing time at the position. Playing behind Brandon Weeden, Chelf threw for 520 yards and 5 TDs in his first two years. The junior-to-be is out to nail down the starter’s job this spring.
