Iowa sophomore RB Damon Bullock is expected to start Saturday's game against Indiana.
Usual starter Mark Weisman will likely miss the contest, and Bullock is just returning from a concussion. After missing four games, Bullock played quite well in last week's game against Northwestern, but he'll be depended on even more going forward. Wed, Oct 31, 2012 02:14:00 PM

Iowa sophomore RB Damon Bullock is expected to play Saturday against Michigan State after missing time due to a concussion.

Bullock will not draw the start, in fact he will likely play second fiddle to Mark Weisman, who is averaging seven yards per carry after taking the lead role. Bullock has missed the last two games, but was averaging 4.3 yards per carry prior to the concussion.

Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis said he was hopeful that sophomore RB Damon Bullock would be back for the Michigan State on October 13.

For once, Iowa has options in their backfield after sophomore Mark Weisman has filled in nicely the last three week. In that span, Weisman has rushed for 507 yards on 6.9 yards per carry to go along with seven touchdowns. In three games before suffering an apparent concussion, Bullock rushed for 280 yards on 4.3 yards per carry.

Iowa sophomore RB Damon Bullock will not play in Saturday's game against Minnesota.

Sophomore Mark Weisman will get the start and will be backed up by freshmen Greg Garmon and Michael Malloy. Bullock appeared to have suffered form a concussion against Northern Iowa and missed last week's game against Central Michigan because of it.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said the Hawkeyes will likely employ a RB by committee approach, similar to the 2009 season.

Ferentz said to expect a system ""where we’re rotating guys in and out." The running back position has been a bit of a kiss of death for the Hawkeyes in recent years, with a combined 10 players either leaving the program or tearing their ACLs, including expected starter sophomore Jordan Canzeri who injured his knee this spring. Sophomores Damon Bullock and De'Andre Johnson have the inside track for playing time, but Johnson was recently cited for disorderly house after police were called to his residence for a noise complaint.

With Jordan Canzeri done for 2012 after tearing an ACL, Damon Bullock assumes the top spot on the depth chart at running back.

The Hawkeyes have been burning through running backs since the end of last season. Marcus Coker, the Big Ten’s second-leading rusher last season, was suspended and ultimately transferred. Mika’il McCall, whose 2011 was limited by a broken ankle, also transferred. That left Canzeri as No. 1. Now, coach Kirk Ferentz will work Bullock, who has only 10 carries as a freshman last season, into the lead role. He is a versatile player who relies on speed instead of power.
