Illinois redshirt freshman Josh Ferguson and sophomore Donovonn Young will split carries at RB this season after being listed as co-starters.
Ferguson made news earlier this summer when he mentioned he hopes to emulate LaMichael James in his running style. Young made one start last season but racked up 451 rushing yards and six touchdowns in back up duty. The two could complement each other well, with Ferguson used as a home run threat while Young can lower his shoulder and pick up the tough yards. Thu, Aug 30, 2012 09:17:00 AM

Illinois RB Josh Ferguson is hoping to emulate former Oregon RB LaMichael James in his redshirt freshman season.

The two backs are of similar size (James is 5-foot-9, 195 pounds, Ferguson is 5-foot-10, 185 pounds), and their best skill on the field is their top-end speed. Ferguson said he hopes to use James' success with the Ducks as a model for himself this season. He, along with sophomore running back Donovonn Young, will lead an inexperienced Illini rushing attack in 2012.

Running back Josh Ferguson shined in his return to the gridiron.

Severe hamstring injuries cost Ferguson the bulk of what would have been his freshman season last fall. He was able to redshirt and his return to action during Illinois’ spring game was no less than eye-opening as he piled up 150 yards and displayed ample speed in so doing. It was an exclamation point on a spring that resulted in his being named the team’s most improved player on offense. Ferguson and Donovan Young completed the spring as the top two running backs.
