Oregon State junior Cody Vaz has been named the team's starting QB for their bowl game against Texas.
Vaz was competing with sophomore Sean Mannion, who began the season as the clear cut starter but suffered an injury that opened the door for Vaz. Both had rough performances, but head coach Mike Tiley appears to be sticking with the older player for the bowl situation. The top priority for either one should be getting the ball to senior receiver Markus Wheaton. Mon, Dec 24, 2012 08:53:00 AM

Oregon State head coach Mike Riley remained noncommittal Monday when asked who will be his starting QB for Saturday's game against Cal.

"I’m not saying that right now," said Riley. "I don’t need to say that right now... The situation is pretty obvious, Cody’s hurt. And Sean is champing at the bit, ready to go." Normal starter, junior quarterback Cody Vaz, injured his left ankle last Saturday and sophomore Sean Mannion was benched after a four interception game. Prior to that, however, Mannion was having a stellar season and was seemingly rushed back from his own injury.

Oregon State junior QB Cody Vaz will start over sophomore Sean Mannion against Stanford on Saturday.

Head coach Mike Riley even stated that Mannion is completely healthy, so it appears the coaching staff believes Vaz gives them a better chance to win. The latter took up the starting role after Mannion suffered a knee injury and regained that spot last week after Mannion threw four interceptions in a loss to Washington.

Oregon State junior QB Cody Vaz will start against Arizona State over sophomore Sean Mannion.

Vaz played heavily in two games this season after Mannion injured his knee and threw three touchdowns without forcing an interception. When healthy, Mannion is the better player, but after the sophomore threw four interceptions last week, Oregon State coaches may have believed they rushed him back too quickly from injuries.

Oregon State junior Cody Vaz will take over as the starting QB in place of the injured sophomore Sean Mannion.

Vaz has seen a game snap in over a year but will do his best to keep the Beavers offense rolling. The junior will make his first start against BYU on Saturday and he will have to deal with a solid Cougars defense, especially in regards to pass rushers.

Cody Vaz is developing into a solid backup QB that the coaching staff would not hesitate to turn to if the situation dictated.

Sean Mannion is Oregon State’s starting quarterback. That is certain. It is also clear that Vaz has elevated his game to the point that if something should happen to Mannion, coach Mike Riley would be comfortable turning the keys over to Vaz. Vaz, who will be a junior in the fall, did not throw a pass last season. He was 6-of-17 for 48 yards in 2010.
