Bucs traded up to select Miami (FL) RB Mike James with the No. 189 overall pick, sending the No. 196 and 229 picks to the Vikings.
It took the Bucs less than an hour to find their LeGarrette Blount replacement. James (5-10, 223) was a fullback/committee tailback throughout his Hurricanes career, rushing 304 times for 1,340 yards (4.41 YPC) and 17 touchdowns. He notched 67 catches. James ran 4.58 at the Combine with a 1.58 ten-yard split, though he doesn't play as fast and generally only gets what's blocked. He should be more a disciplined and effective runner than Blount. One anonymous NFL scout calls Miami's Mike James "a big, heavy" RB, not a FB.

"He played fullback as a courtesy to the kid," the scout says. James is "not big or strong enough. He started at tailback but moved to fullback to keep on the field. He’s too small for a fullback." The Hurricane's yards per carry average, along with his skills, were fairly pedestrian, but he could be drafted in April.

Miami senior RB Mike James rushed for 89 yards on 5.9 ypc, along with three touchdowns in Saturday's overtime win over Georgia Tech.

James has been plodding for most of the last few games, picking up only what was blocked for him, but the senior did much better today and made tacklers miss at the second level. He is a possible late round selection in April.

Miami senior RB Mike James called his 3.8 yards per carry average last season "unacceptable".

Head coach Al Golden blamed the average partially on James' injured toe, but is is tough to give any excuse for that low of a number. James' career average (4.6) is much better, but he offers little in the receiving department with only 37 catches in three seasons. The senior will have to hold off junior Eduardo Clements and true freshman Duke Johnson, who the staff is very intrigued by.

Work ethic has helped lead Mike James to the top of Miami’s depth chart at running back.

James has not lacked for work ethic in the weight room, that’s for sure. His physical conditioning combined with improving his footwork and familiarity with the offense has provided James with not only an opportunity to climb the ladder at RB, but also serve as a key figure on the team. James, who will be a senior, rushed for 275 yards and 7 touchdowns last season giving him 719/11 for his career.
