UConn announced that junior college transfer Chandler Whitmer is the team's starting QB.
Whitmer is only a redshirt sophomore after redshirting at Illinois in 2010 before transferring to a junior college. Apparently he outperformed 2011's starter senior Johnny McEntee as well as sophomores Scoot McCummings and Michael Nebrich. Things could change as preseason practices begin, but for now Whitmer has the edge. Thu, Aug 2, 2012 01:52:00 PM

A consistently good start to fall camp could result the QB job being Chandler Whitmer’s to lose.

Whitmer is a community college transfer who impressed in the spring game, enough so that many feel he has a leg up heading into fall drills. If he can get it done consistently in the pre-season, then Huskies fans might have a quarterback that can lead their team in 2012. Last year’s starter, Johnny McEntee, did not fare poorly in 11 starts. He threw only 8 interceptions with just 4 coming in seven Big East games. The downside was McEntee completed only 51.3 percent of his passes and posted a rating that did not rank in the nation’s top 100. In other words, he was not making things happen -- and he followed up with a sub-par spring game.
